Plus it would still mean our season finished in mid May that season our league needs something to reduce the length of season as it is one of the longest on the calendar. The earlier start date has been chosen to help SPL clubs get up to speed for the early rounds of European football and to reduce the number of midweek fixtures in the winter. However, in a concession to the Old Firm in particular, the SPL board have allowed clubs to opt out of one fixture early in the season to allow them to take part in lucrative pre-season tournaments. My initial thoughts are that it's a good move and doesn't necessarily mean that the season will end earlier. What it will allow for is a floating winter break, whereby if we're hit with bad weather like this season, they can just call off a whole week's fixtures and if the weather doesn't improve enough to play the following week, they can just call another week's fixtures off. They need to do something to sort out the situation where some teams are surging on with their fixtures and others are ending up with a backlog which is impossible to fit in or ends up being unfair and this might be a step in the right direction. We'll need to wait and see. What it doesn't do is address the fixture problems we now face this season and that's something the SPL should be looking at as being a priority issue. 0 Quote Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Gribz 745 Posted March 1, 2011 Share Posted March 1, 2011 It doesnt solve anything if the fixture pile up still comes in Feb to may. You cant play your advanced cup games in Sept when you havent made it past the earlier round. So whilst in theory starting the league earlier seems it will free up some space if we go on another Euro and league cup run next season plus need any replays in the Scottish cup the exact same thing will happen. This guy Doncaster is getting worse by the week. If he wants to ease fixtures then move the league cup back to Aug to Oct, start the season earlier but have a winter break which plays any backlog of games. Soon the season will be a full 12 months. Only the SPL can come out with trash like "lets start the season but you can opt out of a game to go play in friendlies". Yet they cant extend the season when there IS a back log of COMPETITVE games because Celtic want to tour Japan for friendlies. What absolute garbage. metlika 0 Posted March 1, 2011 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Appointing 2 English guys to our top positions in football is a bad start and they know very little about our leagues and history, Regan was a cricket person for a start. For me they continue to make decisions that are clueless, Regan and Doncaster are numpties and how they got the job I'll never know. It wouldn't matter as there really isn't anybody within Scotland that would be useful either. Regan pandered to the tims with the refereeing disaster. Doncaster keeps on lying about saying that things were discussed with fans when they weren't. Plus even admitting that this decision wouldn't please everybody just reeks of ineptness. I agree an earlier start would help but I still feel that we are going to have the longest league seasons in the world and that is just wrong whether its a "winter break" or an enforced break because of the weather more like.
