Chelsea defender Ashley Cole accidentally shot and wounded a 21-year-old club intern at the team’s Cobham training ground, a report today claimed.

The Chelsea left-back was allegedly playing around with a .22 air gun he had brought into the dressing room last Sunday and had not realised it was loaded when he fired at student Tom Cowan from just five feet away.

Mr Cowan, a Loughborough University sports science student on a year’s internship, was hit in the side by a lead pellet, according to the News of the World.

Medics at the ground treated the bleeding wound and Cowan was given two days leave to recover from the shock. He did not require hospital treatment but two days later the wound was still weeping and he was tended to again by medical staff.

“It’s truly inconceivable that a Premier League footballer could bring a gun to the training ground,” a source told the newspaper. “But Ashley pulled the rifle from a box and started larking about with it in the changing room.”

Reports claimed the former Arsenal defender, 30, arrived at Chelsea’s training ground holding the weapon, complete with a muzzle and nightscope, last week. A dozen or so staff and, it is believed, a number of the first team squad, witnessed the drama.

On Wednesday, Mr Cowan was called into a three-hour meeting with “deeply worried” Chelsea officials to discuss the accident, and a day later his father, Ronald, a 51-year-old quantity surveyor, held a second meeting at the club where he demanded to know what action would be taken against Cole.

A .22 air rifle is the most powerful type of weapon that can be legally owned in Britain without a licence. Under British law the incident could be deemed actual bodily harm which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine. Surrey Police did not attend the scene but have said they will study print editions of the newspaper before deciding whether to launch an investigation

Cole, who earns £110,000 a week, is reported to have been reprimanded by club officials, and has formally apologised to Cowan. The newspaper also says that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has ordered a full investigation into the matter.

Neither the club nor Cole have released a statement regarding the incident.

Cole is England’s most capped full back, having made his 87th appearance in last month’s friendly against Denmark.

Chelsea have endured a tough season on the pitch and are fifth going into Tuesday’s match against Premier League leaders Manchester United.

Ashley Cole is quickly becoming a hate figure for the country. I wonder how much Cole/Chelsea paid the victim to keep quiet?

Quickly becoming? He's been hated ever since he released a book in which he described how disgusted he was Arsenal wouldn't pay him 5K more to get to 50K I think it was, hence him leaving to Chelsea.

He got the nickname Cashley Goals from that.

He is a very, very unpopular footballer.

You don't understand, non Arsenal fans too read this and were disgusted by his attitude, which came across as vile and totally mercenary, as well as arrogant and smug. It's not about who he plays for, it's the fact a footballer could belittle the working man by being insulted at being paid a week what most of them struggle to earn in 3 years. A matter of 5k.
