From Andrew Dickson in Lisbon

RANGERS' system against Sporting Clube tomorrow will be dictated by the players available to Walter Smith after a smaller squad than normal travelled to Portugal.

An 19-strong Light Blues pool landed in Lisbon at lunchtime without Steven Naismith and Jamie Ness.

They have both stayed behind in Glasgow for treatment on hamstring and groin injuries and are expected to be out for the next two weeks at least.

Nikica Jelavic, Kirk Broadfoot and Andrew Little are also missing and while Lee McCulloch has flown out with the team, he is sidelined for several weeks after knee surgery.

Despite struggling with illness, Kyle Hutton has arrived with the group too and he could feature at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Central midfield is the one area where Gers are particularly short and the 20-year-old will compete with Steven Davis, Maurice Edu and Kyle Bartley for a start there.

With that said, Hutton is still seen by manager Walter Smith as a doubt and it's more likely he will be on the bench.

Allan McGregor should be in goals with his usual defence of Steven Whittaker, Madjid Bougherra, David Weir and Sasa Papac in front of him.

Vladimir Weiss, like Hutton, has been unwell but he should play alongside the likes of El-Hadji Diouf. Kyle Lafferty is expected to play as a lone forward.

Smith said: "I think our system will be dictated by the players we have available because we have a few players out, particularly in midfield.

"Losing the late goal in the game at Ibrox is something we wanted to try to avoid but because we have, we know we'll have to try to score at some stage of the game."
