Food for thought? [Xavi interview]

The woodwork does not prevent goals Craig. Players miss the goal and hit the woodwork.;)

Fuck you pete - just kidding.

Actually, what prevented him from his hat trick was the fact that the ref blew for a player who got hurt just before he scored a goal..... and the ref was my co-coach. Fucker !!

I actually told my kid that he had a better effort that went past the post than the one that hit the woodwork... he hit it true, guided it, had dinked it over the keeper, but was slightly off target - the one that hit the woodwork was a better chance and he didnt connect as well.

Thanks for the coerver links, I am definitely going to take a look at them. Given I never made it as a player (long story....) I love nothing more than seeing the progression of the kids I have as players - some of them have improved immensely in the 18 mothsI have had them.

Funny thing is..... he came home from his game to watch the Gers game.... after it finished he was saying "darn, if I had scored instead of hitting the post I would have a hat-trick just like Jelavic".

He knows pretty much every Rangers player's number :D

When I first started training the youth here I did as I had learned and started running round the park. I was pulled aside by the other club coaches and told all youth training is done with a ball at their feet. Youth players have a natural stamina and therefore don't need stamina training. Working with the ball also builds stamina. Two birds with one stone.

When I played as a youngster I HATED training because almost NONE of it involved using a ball. So we would run... and run.... and run... and I hated it. Had they made us run the same distance, for the same time - but with a ball... I would have been last one off the training pitch.

I do, however, make my U8's do stretches - still makes sense to teach them good habits.

Thereafter though they do everything with a ball.

If kids don't need stretching then you are wasting their time and energy. You don't need to learn kids unneeded exercises that they need 10 years on. I am not sure on this one but if I was you I would ask for advice on whether stretching is needed at such a young age.
