Gazza_8 233
From The Northern Echo. I think it's a real possibility he'll end up back here if Miller leaves in January however there's no quotes re Boyd in the article. The Northern Echo DAVID Wheater is poised to complete a Ã?£2.5m move to Bolton Wanderers in the next 24 hours after holding talks with Trotters officials on Saturday. And the defender might not be the only Middlesbrough player leaving the Riverside this week, as Rangers will make a formal approach for striker Kris Boyd once Kenny Miller has completed his own move away from Ibrox. Wheater was not at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday as Boro were humbled by League Two opponents Burton Albion in the third round of the FA Cup. Instead, the Redcar-born centre-half was given permission to travel to Lancashire to speak to Bolton officials after Boro accepted an offer for his services on Friday night. Wolves, Stoke and Everton have all inquired about Wheater, but the Reebok Stadium club are the first to table a bid deemed acceptable to the Boro hierarchy. Bolton are understood to have offered around Ã?£2.5m up front, with a further Ã?£1.5m of instalments dependent on Wheaterââ?¬â?¢s future performances. While the 23-year-old was rated closer to the Ã?£10m mark during Middlesbroughââ?¬â?¢s Premier League heyday, this monthââ?¬â?¢s fee will represent a decent return for a player who is due to become a free agent in the summer. On Thursday, when he held his pre-match press conference, Mowbray had been intending to include Wheater in the side that played against Burton. However, the situation changed when an offer was accepted on Friday, and the Boro boss was forced to reluctantly pull the defender from his plans. ââ?¬Å?Things are happening with David, and thatââ?¬â?¢s why he wasnââ?¬â?¢t at Burton,ââ?¬Â confirmed Mowbray. ââ?¬Å?He wasnââ?¬â?¢t available because of things that were happening behind the scenes. ââ?¬Å?You never know what might happen still. Heââ?¬â?¢s in a delicate situation because every party has to agree. Thereââ?¬â?¢s the club that wants to buy him, our club, the player, the playerââ?¬â?¢s agent ââ?¬â?? everything has to be right for a deal to happen. ââ?¬Å?Thereââ?¬â?¢s still lots of potential for things to change, but David wasnââ?¬â?¢t just sitting at home with his feet up (on Saturday). He was actively pursuing things and I expect that to continue.ââ?¬Â Bolton have had a longstanding interest in Wheater, with boss Owen Coyle insisting any defensive addition during the transfer window will not be a direct replacement for the in-demand Gary Cahill, who is now cup-tied after featuring in his sideââ?¬â?¢s 2- 0 win over York City. Boyd and Gary Oââ?¬â?¢Neil are also cup-tied, after starting at the Pirelli Stadium, but that will not affect the former if he joins a Scottish club. Tellingly, sources in Scotland claim Rangers boss Walter Smith will attempt to resign the striker once Miller completes an anticipated move away from Glasgow this week. Rangers accepted Birminghamââ?¬â?¢s offer for Miller on Friday, but the Scotland international is set to snub a move to St Andrewââ?¬â?¢s in order to join Italian side Fiorentina. Either way, Smith will be looking for a replacement, and after watching Boyd leave Ibrox as a free agent last summer, the Gers boss is hoping to lure the 27-year-old back across the border. Wages would have been a problem, as Boyd is understood to have doubled his money when he joined Middlesbrough in July. Millerââ?¬â?¢s departure will free up some much-needed funds, however, and Smith is confident of being able to strike a deal acceptable to all parties.
CumbernauldGers 0
TBH i would accept this, esp if Millers leaves. We dont have money and wont get enough from Miller sale to get anybody else that will score goals like Boyd.
ascender 352
The last thing we need is another striker as we rarely play two up front. Naismith, Beattie and Lafferty could all play through the middle and we still have Jelavic to come back. I'd love to see us have a settled front pairing for a while to see how they get on, but WS seems dead against the idea. I don't see how we can judge any of our current forwards until they get a run in the team in their preferred position as part of a settled strike pairing tbh. I'd love to see how Jelavic and Naismith got on, or Jelavic and Beattie through the middle with Naismith cutting in from the right for example. As for Boyd, if he's going to come back on a 5 year deal for the money he was on before our improved offer that he rejected, then I wouldn't be dead set against the idea as I think he'd be a useful squad player to have.
Frankie 8,682
There's no way I'd be taking Boyd back at an increased wage... He wanted to move and has been unsuccessful so his wage value has reduced IMO. As a free option for a token contribution to his wages, he's maybe worth it but we need to look forward not back.
ascender 352
Still can't figure out why he left to join Middlesborough in the first place.
calscot 0
I think money and greed is the obvious reason.
Frankie 8,682
I think money and greed is the obvious reason. No doubt money comes into it but I genuinely think the lad just wanted to prove himself elsewhere. Boro would have seemed a god choice as they had plenty of Scottish lads, a familiar manager and a good chance of promotion. Unfortunately for him the move has not worked out so I'm sure he'd be desperate to come back given half the chance. Fair enough but we hold all the aces now.
calscot 0
Yeah, but the ironic thing is he doesn't seem quite the type to prove himself as his work-rate and commitment are not great. People with talent but who are lazy and have no drive tend to get found out at higher levels rather than prove themselves. They are best staying within their comfort zones. I'm not having a dig at him, as I'm have somewhat similar traits which is why I stick to academia rather than strike out to prove myself in a more competitive environment for a lot more money. For a start, it allows me to post on here...

Gers4Life 0
Boyd chose to leave us and made his bed, I really hope rangers don't to take him back! I'm not anti-Boyd he was a great servant at our club but we made him an offer and he declined it and decided to move on...
