Fans overwhelmingly favour bigger spl

Recommended Posts

This was copied from a much larger thread on another site , however it sums up my feelings yet again

Here are the countries with populations within a million of Scotland's

Slovakia 5.4 million - 12 Team League - Euro Ranking 23rd

Denmark 5.3 Million - 12 Team League - Euro Ranking 15th

Finland 5.3 Million - 14 Team League - Euro Ranking 30th

SCOTLAND 5.1 Million - 12? Team League - Euro Ranking 16th

Georgia 4.9 million 10 team league - Euro ranking 37th

Norway 4.7 million 16 Team League - Euro Ranking 22nd

Croatia 4.5 million - 16 Team League - Euro Ranking 27th

Moldova 4.4 Million - 14 team League - Euro Ranking 34th

ROI 4.2 Million - 10 Team league - Euro Ranking 29th

Only 2 of the 8 countries that are similarly sizes to Scotland support a league of 16 or more teams. The only two in the top twenty ranked countries in Europe have a 12 team league.

Why do we think a 16 or 18 team league will will work for us and suddenly and magically solve all of our problems?

* The Euro rankings quoted above are the from the UEFA coefficients going into the current season. Seemed about the most realistic way of judging how the leagues compare to each other.

Surely it makes more sense to compare leagues of similar quality. The ROI and Georgian leagues are little better than sunday amature leagues. How many of those leagues listed have clubs as big as the old firm?

And aside from Denmark all those leagues are ranked much worse...

Why should anyone think that changing the size of the leagues will constructively affect the quality of the football? All I can see it affecting is the size and allocation of income. Personally, I think this is the most pointless distraction since Big Dave sent us all out to look for moonbeams ........ utter bollocks from start to finish. Henry McLeish, SFA, SFL, SPL, SD, RST, and several other acronyms posturing over a total hoodwink .... that's what's really wrong with Scottish football, it's generally run by and for morons.

Yes the real problem is quality the rest is semantics. But a 10 team league is just a joke. Aside from anything else it's boring and our league is boring enough as it is

Agreed but surely it makes even more sense to figure out why leagues are variously successful or not and deliver decent quality or not. Equating these differences simply with the size of the league or the population of the country and assuming these are the only determining factors may be entirely missing the point.

We're a country of very small population, a below average affluence, the worst diet in Europe, above average health problems, above average obesity, pretty crappy weather, kids who are not allowed out or are more interested in video games than sport, an education system which has no interest in sport or health or diet, a pretty useless Football Association, councils who are building on former pitches and a media situation where it's infinitely easier to watch games and get information on the neighbouring country's football matches.

On top of two large clubs who seem obsessed with a religious divide, by all accounts and measuring determining factors, we should really be one of the worst footballing countries in Europe. The fact we're as high as 16th could be seen as nigh on a miracle.

Tweaking the size of the league starts to seem to be like arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic in comparison...

PS To allow us to become world beaters, it might be easier trying to get the Olympics committee to accept the new sports of chain smoking, lager drinking, pie eating, knife fighting and Grand Theft Auto playing.

We'd win gold medals in any tonic wine or dope smoking contests!
