CASH-STRAPPED Rangers have coined in more than �£20MILLION thanks to their Champions League campaign.

 

Walter Smith's men bowed out of Europe's premier club competition after a 1-1 draw with Bursaspor on Tuesday.

 

They pocketed six points during the campaign to land a place in the Europa League last 32 in the New Year.

 

Just as importantly was the money their six group games brought into the Ibrox coffers.

 

Gers really looked like they were a spent force in last year's morale-sapping campaign against Stuttgart, Sevilla and Unirea Urziceni. Their fortunes improved on the pitch this year as they upped their game in ties with Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor.

 

Off the park, the importance of them qualifying could never be more stark.

 

Craig Whyte might be on the verge of a takeover which would see the club's mounting debts wiped out and much-needed funds pumped into the side over the coming months.

 

SunSport can now reveal the actual impact Gers' SPL title triumph last season and their displays on the continent since have had on the future of the club.

 

Gers' direct entry into the group stages meant they were guaranteed to take home a cool �£6million as long as they played all their games.

 

That was made up of payments from UEFA of around �£3.2million for just getting there - and another �£470,000 every time they played one of their six group games, netting �£2.82 million more.

 

Rivals Celtic crashing out of the tournament in the qualifiers also earned a massive bonus on the Gers balance sheet.

 

Each country is granted a market share of the TV money and had the Hoops made the group stages, Gers would have had to split the �£7.5million payment.

 

Gers' home win over Bursaspor plus draws against Man United, Valencia and in Turkey this week brought in an extra �£1.7million.

 

On top of that the three home gates would have brought in around another �£4.8million in ticket sales before merchandise and other income is budgeted in.

 

With the Europa League to come now Gers look poised for another cash bonanza with more performance-related incentives.

 

They'll find out who they will face at the draw a week on Friday.

Does that mean that if it went to clear the debt Whyte or someone could buy us for much less than was first thought or would the MIH share go up to keep the same price.

We're becoming cheaper all the time...

 

We must be heading for at least a �£12M profit this year - more with a Europa run.

 

We didn't make much on the way the UEFA final but our squad was twice the size and the bonuses were ridiculous. We also spent quite a bit on players and have since reduced our wage bill, player payments and interest fees as well as reducing other expenditures.

 

Of course we have lost TV and season ticket income since then.

 

After this year's financial results, I'm sure we could spend say �£4M in the January transfer window and still get the debt down to �£18M.

 

To be honest it's never been a better time for a fan takover with say �£24M required up front in the summer and then about 3.5M a year for five years.

 

That equates to 12k people putting up �£2000 then �£300 a year to own the club - seat debenture schemes have raise more without handing over ownership, so why not? You don't even lose much money, as a debt free club with a bit of spending and running without losses should be worth at least �£30M.

 

In the end, Whyte will be getting an incredible bargain.

It also makes a bit of a mockery of Wattie's statement on no money being released in January , there must be scope for some investment this transfer window.

 

From the other Europa league thread .Totally agree , though one round is worth a decent amount of money through UEFA bonuses , ticketing and the new group tv deal which is based on the C/L model we still do not have the required squad necesary to compete , we cannot expect the manky mob to continue to be as bad .....

 

Below is the UEFA guidelines on the Europa league money for this season , note TV and ticketing are not included.

 

 

 

The 48 clubs embarking on UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns this week will receive increased prize money compared with the rewards on offer last season, when the rebranded competition began life as the successor to the UEFA Cup.

 

Each team taking part this term will collect a €640,000 participation bonus together with a match bonus of €60,000 for every match played in the group stage. They can add to this total minimum amount of €1m through a series of performance-related rewards, starting with €140,000 per win and €70,000 per draw in their group games.

 

By way of example, if a side wins all six of their group fixtures they will earn a total of €1.84m from the competition by Christmas.

 

Progress beyond that point will trigger further bonus payments worth: €200,000 for reaching the round of 32, €300,000 for the round of 16, €400,000 for the quarter-finals and €700,000 for the semi-finals.

 

The prize money for the clubs that go all the way to the final will be €3m for the eventual winner and €2m for the runner-up at the Dublin Arena on 18 May 2011.

 

Participating teams will also be entitled to a variable amount depending on the commercial value of their national media rights, their position in their national championship last season, and their performance during this UEFA Europa League campaign.

 

A side could pick up, at best, €6.44m not counting the market pool share.

Unless whyte takes us over Lloyds have still got us by the short and curley's and as has been speculated on here, they are not going to open the biscuit tin anytime soon.
