You ever seen the show Curb Your Enthusiasm, South Park etc? Shows that can have a laugh at all themes and issues including race. I think most intelligent people in modern society can make jokes about various taboo issues and see the difference between that and ignorant racism.

 

Winter's comment has no malice and is relatively amusing, if a little out of place. If he had joked about a white player looking like someone you wouldn't bat an eyelid.
