Oh, I'm not saying the lad can't go onto become a useful signing. I'm just confused given the comments from Bain/Smiith about concentrating on quality and/or refreshing the squad with new faces for improvement.

IMO, James Beattie is not better than Nacho Novo and Foster is not better than Steven Smith. Two strange decisions.

.

Scenario A) - McGhoo enquired about Velicka going on loan & we said 'what you got in return?'

Scenario B) - We enquired about Foster... (not a likely scenario IMO)

I do not disagree with your post in terms of it being a strange signing, however...

Beattie is a big lump, a target man - Novo is neither of those and thus, it is difficult to directly compare the two men. Foster has played around 35-40 games for the past 4 seasons for Aberdeen; whereas Smith, I would guess, has barely had 40 first team starts in his entire Rangers career. So, again, I'm not sure its a fair comparison.

Agreed about your second point. Although Novo and Beattie are different I would have liked Novo, why we offer Beattie a 2 year contract with an option of another year, plus we used some of our money for Beattie. We only offered Novo one year when he is a year younger, I'll never know.

Smith probably too injury prone but we still persist with Webster who is a lot more injury prone, with us.

Why does anyone put any stock in Aberdeen fans opinions? They are notoriously worthless. They couldn't wait to be shot of the two Jimmies even in spite of them being succesful (relatively speaking in Aberdeen's recent history) yet were/are chuffed with McGhee. :D

I spoke to one at work this morning who actually rates him  said he is fast and works hard but as most Scottish players his final ball lets him down a lot

Said he's been one of the better players for them, which doesn't say a lot does it, but became the fans boo boy recently

Many a player has been plucked from obscurity and gone on to become, seemingly, a much better player when playing in a team which has a higher quality of player. Similarly, players have looked good when playing for 'better' teams, but struggled when playing for lesser teams when really they should have stood out.

If the guy has the right attitude, works hard and develops his game, there is every chance he could be a decent signing. Similarly, he could be a fish out of water and get only a handful of subs appearances before slipping back to Sheepville without anyone noticing. Time will tell.

I'd say Weiss is more of a replacement for Novo.

As for Foster, is he any worse than Smith?

Weiss is probably more a direct replacement but I think it was one of Novo's strengths that he could play up front or in deeper roles. As such, I'd have preferred to keep him instead of buying Beattie.

Smith may not be much better than Foster but he did have greater experience of being at Rangers and how we play.

All in all, I don't think our buying strategy has been all that consistent with what Bain/Smith have suggested in recent months.
