Aye but Tom Hately wont be part of that team that breaks through.

What did they do when he was at Reading ? Nothing ?

.

Don't know what you're point is craig because he didn't even play for Reading's first team, he was in the youth & reserve setup. My point was that he's a decent player. He was at Reading as a youngster & got a move to Motherwell while still essentially a youngster. He's still only 20 yrs old, yet he's playing first team football & signed a 3 yr deal for M'well. He's doing not too badly if you ask me. Not saying I agree with Andy that we should be looking to sign him though! ;)

My point is that you were trying to justify Hateley as being a decent player because he previously played for Reading - then further tried justifying it by saying that they might break into the EPL.

My point is that even if they do break into the EPL that bears absolutely no relevance as to how good, or bad to be fair, a player Hateley is. Unless he is part of the squad that actually breaks into the EPL then it is a poor justification attempt at saying he is a good player.

Your post above would tend to back up Gazza's point rather than your own. His point, unless I am mistaken, was that Hateley when at Reading was a mediocre player - you then say that he never even got a game with their first team - a first team which never got close to going back up. That would lend weight to him being mediocre IMO.

At no point did I say he wasnt doing too badly - but even the most naive of us would surely admit that there are plenty of mediocre players "not doing too badly" for themselves - we even have some of them at Ibrox.....

I have only seen Hateley against Rangers so I have no real opinion on his ability to be honest - although that FK against us was a cracker.

And my own original point (whether lost or not) was simply that it was a bit OTT, perhaps even out of order to say that if Hateley's dad hadn't played for us he'd be a 'nobody'. I didn't intend to start a debate on whether he's mediocre, average, good or otherwise. Should just keep shtoom tbh.

Guest Guivarc'h

He wouldn't get anywhere near our team. As a central midfielder, he isn't even close to McCulloch, Edu, or Davis, and we have at least 2 right backs better than him

I think whomever said he would be a nobody but for his Dad was more in reference to anyone suggesting him for Rangers - not necessarily overall as a player. Obviously I could be wrong - but I took it as a "if his Dad hadnt been a Ranger then we wouldnt even be discussing this possibility".

And absolutely do NOT keep shtoom - this is all part of good, respectful debate my man :D

If we were in the Championship then his crednentials as a Reading apleyr would have some credence, as it is we live in the SPL and so we need players able to win said title... Hateley may be no Bryan Robson but he would, I feel, help us in a squad capacity to retain the title, while being (as I said in the OP) nowhere near the finished article.

But we aren't in a position to sign the finished article, are we? And if we have the finished article, such a player is likelyly to be sold, a la Davis, n'es't pas?

We nee dto come ionto the reality. We're only in the larket for the like sof Hateley, so why not get them ASAP rather than later? It's been pointed out he has signed a new deal which I didn't know, thank you for that, but I still think that Motherwell, who are maybe the only side worse off than us, would accept around the 200k mark.

Unreal typos. sorry. I have corrected as many as I can/

i'd rather play a youngster than sign the likes of him sorry, he's not good enough and I certainly don't believe we're 'only' in the markets for players like him these days........
