DAVIE WEIR will be given the chance to extend his astonishing Rangers career.

 

SunSport can reveal Ibrox boss Walter Smith will seek contract talks with his veteran skipper on his return from the NARSAR convention in Las Vegas.

 

And it's understood the ex-Scotland ace, 40 last month, will agree terms on a new one-year deal.

 

Weir would have called time on his playing career had Smith quit.

 

But after watching his mentor commit for 12 more months, Weir is now willing to follow.

 

Smith rates Weir as the best pro he's ever worked with and with continued speculation over the futures of Madjid Bougherra, Danny Wilson and Kirk Broadfoot, he's seeking cover at centre-half.

 

But it seems unlikely striker Tommy Smith will join Weir at Ibrox.

 

As SunSport revealed, Gers tabled a �£300,000 bid for the Portsmouth star this week. But skint Pompey laughed out the offer and sources close to the deal insists Gers are unlikely to return with a new improved offer.

 

Ibrox chairman Alistair Johnston has revealed Gers delayed a crucial meeting with Lloyds Bank until they qualified for the Champions League.

 

Cash-strapped Gers were summoned by the bean-counters for showdown talks over their �£30million debt.

 

But Johnston dodged them until he knew how much cash they'd earn next season.

 

After securing the SPL title and a place in the Champions League group stages, Johnston was in a stronger position to agree a deal with Lloyds.

 

He reckons relationships between the parties have never been better and said: "Getting into the group stages of the Champions League made a huge difference going into our meeting with the bank.

 

There was no point having that meeting until we knew for sure where we were going to be, so we scheduled it for the day after the season ended.

Tommy Smith is certainly no worse technically than Boyd or Novo, in fact i'd probably say he's better than Novo full stop

 

He is not a goalscorer however and is also 30 years old, which in my opinion is too old for a prospective new forward whose career has always been based around pace and trickery

Agreed, thirty is too old and inevitably too temporary. What was the point of letting a settled Novo go if you're only going to replace him with someone who probably won't be here two years from now and who might take a season to settle. Mind you, Boyd ain't gone yet.

Newly taken over Malaga have today shown interest in Madjid Bougherra, with a reported �£4million pound deal being prepared. The new owner of the La Liga team, Qatari tycoon Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, apparently wants the Algerian defender to be the bedrock of a new era at the Spanish club.

 

It is also been mooted that as part of any potential deal, Rangers would be invited to play a money spinning friendly in the Qatari capital Doha.

 

The Sunday Mail is reporting that representatives of the club have already made contact with representatives of the Algerain stopper. The Sheikh, who is leading up a consortium of businessmen, now plans to head out to South Africa to meet the 27-year-old in a bid to sell him on a move to Spain.

 

According to quotes in the paper attributed to someone close to Bougherra: "It would be a dream for Madjid to play in Spain but his focus is on the World Cup and then he'll decide his future."

 

This is just the next chapter in the saga of Bougherra ultimately leaving Rangers this summer. However, if this story is in fact true then surely an owner openly travelling to meet with our player in order to sell him on a move to his club is tapping up?

 

If they have the money then �£4million simply wouldn't happen, he's worth more, unless of course it is all paid up front which Smith could then use this season to bolster the squad.

let the dripping dodger go his interest in rangers fc this season was virtually zero.if he has a good world cup then he will throw the allah teddy out the cot to manouvre a transfer.

PORTSMOUTH have offered Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot a big-money deal to quit Ibrox.

 

The Championship outfit have joined Premier League new boys Blackpool in the chase for the full-back.

 

Portsmouth are currently in administration but are set to unveil Steve Cotterill as their new boss and can still sign free agents.

 

And this week they offered Broadfoot a lucrative two-year deal to move to Fratton Park. The Scotland cap is currently considering his options, including a new vastly-improved deal from Rangers and the chance to play in the English top-flight with Ian Holloway�s shock troops at Blackpool.

 

Broadfoot is out of contract at the end of the month and is also attracting interest from Wigan Athletic. Ibrox boss Walter Smith is desperate to keep the 24-year-old full-back because he has already lost Steven Smith, DaMarcus Beasley and Nacho Novo under freedom of contract.

 

Top scorer Kris Boyd is also set to move on with a big-money offer from Turkey to work under former Rangers star Shota Arveladze at Kayserispor tipped to be his preferred option.
