Dave King's bid to seize control of Rangers suffered a legal hammer blow when the tycoon was hauled into a South African courtroom on charges of fraud and racketeering.

Charged under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, the Glaswegian-born businessman appeared with former business associate Ian Morris in Randburg Magistrates Court. And none of the 37 charges detailed yesterday relate to the high-profile tax battle with the South African Revenue Service - leaving King facing a highly-damaging and potentially ruinous battle to prove his innocence.

Bid blow: Dave King (third from left)

Released on bail, the 55-year-old has been given until July 28 to prepare a defence before being placed in the dock at South Gauteng High Court. The Ibrox director returned to Glasgow for talks with majority shareholder Sir David Murray after the club's SPL title triumph two weeks ago.

Keen to outmuscle Andrew Ellis' bid, the King consortium was reported to have met with Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, chairman Alastair Johnston and officials of Lloyds Bank, raising expectations that a rival bid to that of Ellis' might be forthcoming.

Credited with an £18million bid for Rangers in tandem with fellow Ibrox director Paul Murray and transport tycoon Douglas Park, King has been targeted by a series of angry investors. SARS have been the most highly publicised litigant, but a statement from the country's National Prosecuting Authority yesterday made clear that the 37 counts labelled yesterday are above and beyond the other 322 tax fraud accusations and concern the mis-selling of software developed by King's Specialised Outsourcing Limited to investors in October 1997.

'The prosecution is the culmination of a series of complaints received from institutional investors, which includes the South African Reserve bank, Old Mutual, Sanlam, Southern Life and Coronation,' said a spokesperson.

'The main thrust of the allegations is based on the alleged deliberate manipulation of financial statements, financial reports and the recorded earnings of SOL with a view to enhancing the growth profile and share price of the company.

'These alleged misrepresentations caused the publication of reports which allegedly falsely portrayed the growth potential of investments.'

Scottish Sun suggests Ellis will make an offer for the club on Monday.

http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/spl/2981322/Ellis-set-to-make-his-offer.html

ANDREW ELLIS is on the verge of tabling a £33million offer for Rangers.

The London-based property developer will make his final deliberations this weekend - ten weeks after first declaring his interest to the Stock Exchange.

Ellis has spent the last seven days locked in talks with Ibrox owner Sir David Murray.

Negotiations are still on-going, but SunSport understands the saga is nearing a conclusion.

Despite stinging criticism from US-based Gers chairman Alastair Johnston, Ellis' takeover bid remains alive and well.

A prolonged period of due diligence has been carried out and Ellis could finally make his move for Murray's 92 per cent stake in the SPL champs on Monday.

Ex-Northampton chairman Ellis was seething this week when Johnston launched a blistering attack on his credentials.

Johnston cast doubt over whether a bid for the club would ever be tabled - a swipe which angered Ellis.

Ellis and his camp - the rival bidders to South Africa-based Dave King - feel their takeover bid has been undermined.

But it has not stopped them moving closer to striking a deal.

Meanwhile, DaMarcus Beasley last night thanked USA boss Bob Bradley for a World Cup lifeline.

The winger, 27, made just nine starts for Gers this season but was included in Bradley's provisional 30-man squad.

He said: "I have to credit the coaching staff as they gave me a chance to prove I can still play at the highest level. Now I hope I can make the final squad."

The Heralds's Sports Editor is Donald Cowey, a former Editor of ra Sellik View.

The Herald's Chief Sports Writer is Hugh MacDonald, a former rc priest. MacDonald was the Herald's Literary Editor for a decade, he had a weekly column in the Saturday Sports supplement. He revealed in this column that he grew up in a household where neither his father, nor grandfather could bring themselves to use the term, 'Rangers'! It makes you wonder what term they did use? Further, MacDonald eulogised his time at St Mungos, the ambience in the school toilets on the afternoon of a big European match at ra Piggery. He related that they gathered to sing rebel songs before heading to the game. I could go on ...............

The Chief Football Writer at the Herald is Michael Grant, suffice to say he is another Rangers hating cnut.

The Herald is best ignored by Rangers supporters.

And the quotes by Edgar are they to be "ignored", which are seemingly being airbrushed from certain places, and it was Edgars quotes that bother me nothing else, or is it OK for him to make quotes wth regard to administration, he should be deblazered and detied for the bollox he spouted. Who needs enemies with "friends" making quotes like that.

Keen to outmuscle Andrew Ellis' bid, the King consortium was reported to have met with Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, chairman Alastair Johnston and officials of Lloyds Bank, raising expectations that a rival bid to that of Ellis' might be forthcoming.

Reporter A: Wouldn't it be good if this charge happened just as King was about to put a bid in?

Reporter B: Yeah, but that didn't happen, did it?

Reporter A: Say "King talked to Bain, Johnston and officials"

Reporter B: What do you mean say "King talked to Bain, Johnstone and officials"?

Reporter A: Thanks Reporter B.

Reporter A types "the King consortium was reported to have met with Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, chairman Alastair Johnston and officials of Lloyds Bank"

Reporter A: I don't know about you, but that raised my expectations, when you said it there, that a rival bid might be forthcoming

Reporter B: Eh?

Reporter A types "raising expectations that a rival bid to that of Ellis' might be forthcoming"

Reporter B: You can work wonders with that passive construction eh?

Reporter A: What can I say? Another 100% true report complete.
