Wilson savours extraordinary breakthrough at Rangers

Exclusive by Lindsay Herron

A LITTLE over a year ago Danny Wilson was nervously waiting for his first appearance at Hampden hoping that Rangers could overcome Hibs and savour glory in the SFA Youth Cup Final.

At the age of 17 he was preparing for a national final at the National Stadium. It was the biggest game of his fledgling career - and it ended in disappointment as the Light Blues' Wilsonunder-19 side agonisingly went down 2-1 in the final minute of extra time.

Now 12 months later Wilson is on the brink of winning his first SPL Championship medal to add to the League Cup badge he collected in March and coincidentally it is Hibs again who are standing in his way.

The runaway winner of the Rangers Young Player of the Year award last Sunday and surely the main contender for all national versions, Wilson has played a huge part in what will surely be another title-winning season for Rangers.

He has played 24 first team matches in all competitions when all he dreamed about was ONE substitute appearance or maybe a run in the early rounds of one of the cups.

He played in the Champions League twice - against Unirea in Romania and Stuttgart at Ibrox - and he made his Old Firm debut at Parkhead in a fighting 1-1 draw in January.

The incredible thrill of playing in - and eventually winning - his first major cup final was tempered by a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

And he even scored his first top team goal with a great header in a 4-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

It has almost been like a fairytale for the teenager and he admits it will all take some time to sink in.

He said: "I'm sure there will be a moment in the summer when I sit down and think about it and I will realise that I will be a Double winner in my first season and at 18 years of age that really is something special.

"My aim is to kick on and keep learning. I have had a few games in the first team now and I want to continue the way I am going and see how much I can do but I will take everything one step at a time.

"I'm not setting any high targets but I obviously want to achieve as much as I can.

"I'm delighted to have won the Rangers Young Player of the Year award and I'm delighted with the way the whole season has gone.

"I didn't expect to play that much but I got a couple of chances due to different circumstances so to get this award is a great honour for me.

"There are players like Flecky and Andy Little who have been pushing to get in this season too and luckily I have managed to get quite a few games under my belt and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

"I would have been happy with a sub appearance or maybe a start in a cup tie but I have played 25 games now and that's so many more than I expected.

"It's great to get that amount of action at my age and test myself in the SPL."

Would be very good but I'd be surprised if Bougherra is still here unfortunately... :(

As would I.

As an aside, you agree it would be a great pairing, does this mean a demotion for Weir in your view?

While I have been delighted with Weir's form - especially this season - I'm not daft enough to realise we can improve on what we have.

Weir would certainly remain an important part of the squad for me but I'd definitely prefer a more long-term outlook in our defence - if guys like Wilson, Bougherra, Webster and even Broadfoot can show they are a better option. And if they are even here next season themselves which is by no means certain.
