Pal Steven Davis' love of Rangers

Recommended Posts

SEAN DILLON is convinced the only reason Steven Davis hasn't been lured back to the Premiership is because of his love for Rangers.

But Dillon aims to wreck the treble hopes of his former Aston Villa team-mate when Dundee United roll up at Ibrox for tomor row's Scottish Cup clash.

The pair came through the ranks at the English outfit and it's there Dillon first clapped eyes on the Northern Ireland midfielder whom he regards as being tailor-made for the English top-flight.

Dillon knows Belfast boy Davis is a Rangers diehard but he's on a mission to spoil his hopes of a clean sweep of domestic trophies in their quarter-final clash.

He said: "Steven is a great player and I was actually with him as a YTS at Aston Villa even though he was a couple of years younger than me.

"It was my last year at Villa and his first so I knew him.

"I was with the under-19s in my last year there while he was with the under-17s. He certainly stood out when he was younger and it wasn't a surprise when he broke into the first team.

"We don't speak that often now but whenever I do see him it's usually at games.

"I'm surprised he isn't back in the Premiership but he is a massive Rangers fan.

"He's obviously happy but he's good enough to be in the Premiership - he's one of Rangers' best players.

"Even when he doesn't play well he's still a threat so we'll have to an eye on him ."

United have sworn there will be no repeat of their last visit to Govan which ended in a 7-1 thumping.

Dillon said: "We've not really spoken about it that often since then but we knew it would get brought up.

"The result hurt us but now we just want to prove that we're better than that."
