I'm not sure he's meant to respond to the questions being asked other than by saying "Yes, we're shite" "Yes, I might get fired" and who's going to say that when you have to motivate a team? I think it's because he's a fairly honest, quite simple guy, and the press are devious and sensationalist. He doesn't have the gravitas Walter has, and the people he's talking to are just sharper.
