Are Bougherra and Wilson the future?

Recommended Posts

With talk of a takeover looking on the horizon, there may be change afoot. But nevertheless, and it relies on a lot of assumptions, are Bougherra and Wilson the future of our defence?

Who knows, maybe Bougherra will stay after all (our personal feelings on his character notwithstanding) and hopefully Wilson will too - unless we're all wrong and Weir really CAN go on forever, there will come a time he has to stop playing.

Wouldn't be the worst replacement partnership in the world.

Decent players leave Ibrox so quickly now that its hard to see much of a future for Bougherra.

I'm so used to seeing anonymous performances from players on the left (often out of position) that I'd settle for a natural inconcistent winger that is at least capable of getting down the left and supplying a half decent ball.

I'm sure Bougherra is off in the summer.

The future is more likely to be Webster and Wilson, although Wilson seems uninterested in signing a new contract and therefore may also have to be sold in the summer.

I know a lot of people presume Webster will come back here but i don't see it myself. If we're still under present ownership, we'll desperately try to get him off the wagebill again. If we're under new ownership, frankly we need better defenders than Andy Webster

If we sell Bougherra and Weir steps down then we would need another centre half, and he may be the most cost effective answer.

However I don't think that Walter fancies him, and it could depend on new ownership/management.

I personally can't see Bougherra here next season. Weir might still be playing and as much as he has done for us I think we should look to move him into a coaching position. If Wilson doesn't sign a contract he might be shifted on as well. Webster a tricky one I have heard that he is unsure of playing with us again. So we may need a whole new central defence. Personally I would be happy with Bougherra and Wilson if they were both comitted.

Best scenario is for Bougherra to stay and partner Wilson with possibly an inform Webster being back also.

But I can see Bougherra being sold for a few million and Webster may fancy first team football at Tannadice as he is has been jixed at Ibrox. If Weir retires it leaves Wilson (if signs new contract), Broadfoot, Papac and McCulloch moving back into defence.

I'd imagine Bougherra will move for what should be a decent fee. As such, I'd expect us to replace him with that money while retaining Weir and Wilson.

Tonel of Sporting would be my bet but Smith may fancy someone a bit more physical.

Webster has done well at Utd but apparently doesn't get on well with Smith so his Rangers career may end sooner rather than later. I'd also hope, given his SPL form and Scotland recall, we can get over £1million for him from a Championship club.

As such Tonel plus another player is not beyond the realms of possibility.
