It was an afternoon when hard graft and perseverance deservedly won the game for Gers - not the performance of match referee Dougie McDonald, as suggested by some.

A draw had seemed to be on the cards for so long and it appeared Celtic's time wasting and the awful unsporting behaviour of Diomansy Kamara had worked in their favour.

Some strong quotes there from this article, about time.

Walter Smith masks, maybe we should get them for the cup final :)

Davie Weir today claimed Walter Smith deserves to be recognised as one of the all-time great Rangers managers.

Smith’s side, who still have a game in hand, moved 10 points clear of Celtic in the SPL on Sunday with a 1-0 win in the Old Firm game at Ibrox. It was his 26th triumph in the world-famous Glasgow derby – which took him level with former Rangers manager Scot Symon and ex-Celtic boss Jock Stein.

And, despite the fact the veteran coach was not able to sign any new players in the summer, the Gers still have a great chance to land the Treble.

If the cash-strapped Glasgow club win all three domestic trophies this season, it will take the boyhood supporter’s haul in his two spells at the helm to an incredible 20.

Skipper and centre half Weir believes Smith is up there with anybody who has been in charge at Rangers in their entire 137-year history. He said: “In my opinion, Walter was already up there for what he has achieved in different eras at the club.

“He was in charge when there was money to spend in the 1990s and even though things are different now he still has us back competing for trophies.

“We obviously won the championship last year and you have to give the manager great credit for how he has turned things around and kept us successful.

“For me, Walter is definitely one of the top, top managers of all time and hopefully he will be here for a long time to come.

Weir added: “Current players and managers never seem to get looked upon in the same light as those who have been with us in the past.

“Because of that, sometimes people don’t realise what’s happening in the present and that’s the case with Walter.

“The likes of Bill Struth and Scot Symon were great people with great records, but for what he has done at the club the manager stands up alongside them.

“Walter falls into the legend category for what he has done, what he has achieved and what he is doing today.”

However, Weir, who helped Rangers keep a clean sheet against the Hoops at the weekend, is refusing to accept the race for the title is over.

Speaking in the Rangers News, he said: “Everybody here knows that is not the case. In the last two seasons the title race has gone down to the last day.

“I think it’ll be close again and I don’t think anything is going to be decided at this stage in the campaign.

“We just have to keep looking forward. Our results have been good lately and we’ve had a few draws, but we have stayed unbeaten for a while now so that is a big thing for us.

“Now we’ve got everyone fit, back in the squad and competing for places, hopefully that can spur everybody on.

“If you look back at December, we scored a lot of goals and won games comfortably.

“It would be great if we could get back to that, but football doesn’t always work like that.”

Bit in bold will go down like a lead balloon no doubt.
