Gers confirm McGregor "incident"

His fiancee has a different version of events to that one you have above Zappa. This from sporting life

Allan McGregor is waiting to discover whether an attack in Glasgow city centre had left him with a fractured eye socket, according to his fiancee.

The injuries Rangers goalkeeper McGregor sustained after being set upon in the early hours of Sunday morning saw him omitted from the Scotland squad on Monday and he could also miss Sunday's Old Firm derby.

Fiancee Leah Shevlin told the Scottish Sun: "The bone under his left eye might be broken, but we are waiting on the results of a CT scan.

"His face is bruised and swollen."

She added: "His clothes are slashed. It's lucky he was wearing a heavy shirt otherwise he could have been in a lot of trouble."

McGregor required treatment at Southern General Hospital for his injuries, which were sustained on Bath Street according to Strathclyde Police, who have confirmed they had received an assault complaint.

Shevlin revealed she discovered McGregor unconscious in the street near their apartment.

She added: "He didn't have a clue what was going on. There was quite a lot of blood. It was a horrible experience. Allan doesn't know how he got home.

"He doesn't know who did it and he doesn't know where it happened. He's had a fright and he's shocked."

Responding to reports McGregor had been out celebrating Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan's birthday at Karbon nightclub.

Shevlin said: "He had been in Moskito playing pool, not doing any harm. He wasn't properly out and about and he wasn't at anyone's party.

"He just went down to Karbon to get a friend."

The assault on Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor which cost him his place in the Scotland squad for next week’s challenge match against the Czech Republic and could also see him miss Sunday’s Old Firm match was as inevitable as it was regrettable, according to former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McGarvey.

Sectarian violence has been a social problem in the west of Scotland for well over a century and McGarvey, 53, reveals that, 25 years after his Parkhead career ended, a Rangers supporter attempted to goad him into a fight in a Glasgow bar at the weekend.

It explains his bafflement as to why McGregor was wandering around the city centre on his own in search of a taxi in the wee small hours of Sunday morning.

The 28 year-old was beaten by three assailants after he had attended a 21st birthday party for Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan and was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was treated for eye and back injuries.

McGarvey argues that Old Firm footballers must realise that there are areas of Glasgow which should be out of bounds for them if they intend to socialise in the city.

“It really comes down to common sense,” he said. “The most high-profile player to work in this country in the last 30 years was Henrik Larsson and you never heard a whisper about him being where he shouldn’t be.

“Brian Laudrup was exactly the same. He lived his life in the right way and Celtic fans would be more likely to applaud him than assault him.

“However, there’s violence in every city in the world and Glasgow’s no different. Drink fuels that violence and Glasgow has had a problem with that for the last 100 years.

“Visit any hospital on a Friday or Saturday night and the out-patients will be mobbed with people who’ve been attacked and alcohol will have played a part in it. That’s the reality and players simply have to accept that.”

McGarvey joined Celtic from Liverpool in 1980 and harvested 113 goals from 245 appearances before leaving them after scoring the winner against Dundee United in the 1985 Scottish Cup final.

Yet even now he finds himself on the receiving end of stick from Rangers supporters.

“I was having a quiet pint in the city centre on Saturday and this punter started yelling at me, going on about how Rangers were going to win the league and giving me some personal abuse,” he said.

“He did it in the hope that I would get into a fight with him but I don’t react in these situations. I know how to handle them and something like that means nothing to me: I just ignore it.

“Neil Lennon and Aiden McGeady have also been attacked recently and I’m not condoning the people responsible for that but it’s all about making good decisions.

“If you play for Celtic or Rangers then you should be sensible enough to realise that there are certain places you just don’t venture into – even now I wouldn’t go for a drink in Paisley Road West on a Saturday night – and that it’s best to go out in a group of four or five.”

McGarvey also questions the wisdom behind McGregor attending Sheridan’s party in the first place.

“I found that strange because it’s obvious that there would have been a lot of Celtic fans there and some of them would have had a good drink in them so I don’t think that was a good decision on his part,” he said.

“Another thing I can’t understand is why he ended up on his own outside searching for a cab. Surely someone at the club could have ordered one for him?

“Things aren’t as bad as they were in Glasgow during the 1950s and 60s as far as bigotry is concerned. The situation has definitely improved but it hasn’t gone away.

“Unfortunately for both sets of players, there are still fans out there who have utter hatred for the other side and, because of that, they need to be on their guard.

“No-one is suggesting that they should never go out but there’s no reason why they can’t find somewhere that’s safe and, if there’s any sign of aggro, they should just walk away from it.

“The problem with young players is that too often they think that they’re invincible.”

So, I know something like this was rumoured last week, but wtf is going on?

From the Daily R*ecord.

THE fiancee of controversial Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has been arrested and charged with wasting police time.

Cops swooped on blonde model Leah Shevlin, 27, at the posh west end home in Glasgow she shares with McGregor while he was training this morning.

She was taken to Stewart Street police station in the city and interviewed under caution with her solicitor present.

Strathclyde Police confirmed the arrest - and are no longer investigating an alleged attack on the Rangers goalkeeper.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 27-year-old female is subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal for wasting the time of the police. "We are no longer investigating an assault."

The shock news comes days after McGregor was questioned by Strathclyde Police over alleged "inconsistencies" in statements made by himself and Miss Shevlin about a black eye and back wound he suffered in Glasgow city centre.

Detectives seized CCTV film from the Seventh Heaven lap-dancing bar, which is yards from where McGregor claims to have been assaulted, and from cameras near the couple's £900,000 apartment in the city's West End.

McGregor had X-rays, which revealed his eye socket and cheekbone were bruised, but not fractured and the check-up

He was able to play in Sunday's Old Firm game at Ibrox which saw Rangers beat Celtic 1-0.

Shevlin has claimed she helped McGregor into their house after finding him injured on their doorstep - and has denied that it was she who had inflicted the injuries.
