Who were you right and wrong about?

A slightly different thread to our usuals.

 

This thread asks the simple question: which players have changed your mind about them, and who were you right about all along?

 

I'll start so folk have a clue what I mean.

 

I was right:

 

Pedro Mendes. Luxury player who flattered to deceive and deceived many fans in the process.

 

Madjid Bougherra. Good SPL player with an attitude problem, but out of his depth at European level.

 

Kenny Miller. Didn't want us to sign him but he won me over with some real impact displays and while he's been inconsistent at times, he has proven me right to rate him as one of our best players.

 

McGregor. Far too many wanted Alexander in goal during Boozegate based on some moralistic view of player conduct rather than pure raw ability. Our goalie is now one of our most valuable assets.

 

Kevin Thomson. I never bought into the hype about him while many viewed him as a messiah. Nowadays he's struggling to even achieve the average level I didn't use to rate in the first place!

 

I was wrong:

 

Kris Boyd. While his poor record against Celtic continues on, he's well and truly dispelled the 'can't do it against a top 6 team' myth this season especially. He's proven me wrong that he has no ability, and as well as scoring he's shown he can pass, run, hold up, header and track back.

 

Novo. Never saw him as more than a sub impact player, one who lacked the basics. His recent run has shown me up, for he's caused absolute hell down the left wing and scored the critical goal against Hamilton. Form of his life and is more than I thought he was.

 

Broadfoot. While no Dani Alves, and was torn apart by McNeedy, he's proven himself to be quite a capable RB. Ordinary, workmanlike but with a little more ability than I used to give him credit for, Broadfoot has a firm grasp of his first team slot and is well worth a new contract.

 

Whittaker. Wrong but in the wrong way. I used to rate him high as the sky, but his defensive frailties and psychological weaknesses have bubbled dramatically this season. Often looking like a rabbit in headlights, his sparkling form of the Uefa run is a distant memory and he now seems like a trainwreck of a player.

Right About (in my opinion):

 

Kenny Miller - knew he'd be a good signing

 

Steven Naismith - didn't rate him at the time, rate him even less so now

 

David Weir - 3 years in a row i've said he'd prove he deserved a new contract whilst many folk were saying he was finished and would never last another season

 

Jerome Rothen - didn't think he'd be suited to the SPL

 

 

Wrong About (in my opinion):

 

Kyle Lafferty - thought he was going to be a Cousin-esque forward who would have CB's in his back pocket

 

Kevin Thomson - once thought he was so good he could probably walk into any midfield in Britain (including Man Utd and Chelsea) It now appears it was a purple patch from an average player, though hopefully i'll be wrong again

 

Steven Davis - thought he was overrated and over-hyped, now i think he is the best player in the league by far

I can't rate the best footballer at the club?

 

I don't like to do this until after they leave usually, but I'll make a tiny exception.

 

I was correct about Boyd, Lafferty and I will second your McGregor comments.

I would tend to look at players where the majority opinion was wrong but it took a large base of the fans to come round to this.

 

E.g. Hutton. Better than Bardsley when PLG wouldn't pick him. Played excellently from November of PLG's season, but took many fans until well into the new year to realise this. Even when he was struggling for form and apparently shite I could see there was a very good footballer in him.

 

The only player I would say I was "wrong" about recently was Miller. And even then I wouldn't say I was 100% wrong. He is still inconsistent but his scoring record this season has definitely proven me wrong on at least part of his game. I didn't think he had that in him. As I say though, in his return spell he has still shown some of the same faults I expected.

Novo and Boyd - I was convinced both would be bit-part players for Rangers. And when we signed Boli and Laudrup at the same time I was convinced Boli would be the bigger player

Where do I start?

 

Cammy Fraser - turned out to be a strong midfielder with a range of passing and a deadly dead ball specialist. It was playing in a pish team that made him look crap. 86-87, when him and Davie Cooper were on form, we were outstanding.

 

Gary Stevens - looked lazy, best RB I've seen. Only Hutton comes close.

 

Mark Hateley - looked abysmal, turned out OK.

 

NIgel Spackman, John McGregor, through to Hutton today.

 

And I suppose I should mention that I was there with the 'best' of them, telling Ally where he could go.

 

The only player I can think of that I was right about was Craig P******n.

I am afraid i don't know how you get that opinion. He won us a draw in the first Stuttgart game. Rothen lost us against the Romanians. He was certainly not any worse than anyone else.
