Why do some players appear to improve away from Ibrox

Recommended Posts

Charlie Adam might have improved fitness wise, but he hasn't vastly improved as a player technically or anything like that. He's always been a good player & he's mainly looking sharp for Blackpool this season because he's getting a good run of games & continued scoring the good number of goals from midfield that he's always had in his game. I'm getting a bit tired repeating this, but the last time he was given a good run of games in a Rangers shirt he was quite excellent. With us he could play several different positions from left midfield to left central midfield in 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 formations & that's exactly what Holloway is doing with Adam at Blackpool, playing him in various positions where he knows Adam can play. Holloway is a tinkerer, so while one week Adam might start in left central midfield, the following week he's just as likely to start in a wide left midfield role. He's played him at right central midfield as well, which is another position that Adam can play. Very versatile player across the midfield tbh.

Anyway, just wanted to point out to the OP that Adam hasn't really improved other than his fitness. He's always been a good player & as I've said before, imo Blackpool got a bargain. They think they got a bargain themselves, which says it all.

Que the instant replies saying Adam was a shite player that ate too many pies.

Charlie Adam, for us, seemed to have a real problem with the basics of the game. He was lazy on the ball, gave it away too easily, and seemed to lack energy. But for some reason he had a gift of occasionally pulling off Hollywood passes and shots.

I don't know what he's like for Blackpool and I don't really care, because my last and most vivid memory is of him getting away with stamping 2 opponents in 2 successive matches. That kind of thuggery has no place at Ibrox. Not even when it's a Sheep you're stamping on.

tbh 'Arry just doesn't fancy him. I don't know why. He's a class player, who if given a run is as good as any RB in England.

He needs a move, but is probably content on the wages.

My bad, should have been clearer. I was using Hutton as an example of a player who has actually improved under the current management regime - yes he always had it in him but WS and Co brought it out of him.

Young Charlie always tried the Zidane pass rather than the simple 5 yard pass. More ofthen than not the Zidane pass never came off or he landed on his arse attempting it. His thought process needed improving which would result in playing the better pass.

I'm glad he went but I'm glad he's playing well.

.

A bit of dirty play must be ok in Walter's book or he wouldn't have signed McCulloch.

One thing about players fitness this season is that there is no reserve league. Therefore it is harder for fringe players and those returning to fitness to get their sharpness. Not saying that excuses players from having a poor attitude to their fitness and I would contrast Broadfoot who hardly looks like he's been away, to the likes of Adam who seemed to struggle constantly.

Down to mental strength. If they can handle being ripped to shreds by supporters who rip them for any slight mistake, they may make it at Ibrox. If they can't they will probably go on to appear better elsewhere, where the fans back them.

It's crap to have to post that we are shit at supporting the team but with some exceptions, we are.

Totally agree. The pressures and expectations imposed on Rangers players simply can't be compared to most other clubs. Playing for the likes Cardiff and Blackpool must seem like an alternative reality for Burke and Adam. Personally I think - like I did at the time - that it was a mistake to sell them, even though in the case of Burke it was an easier decision to make because of his injury record. IMO they could both have been used at times this season, but no doubt they would have been given nowhere near enough game time OR support from the fans to develop as they have done.

It's good to see them doing well, but I don't see the point in placing blame solely at the door of the management team that they aren't here doing it for us.

I agree with your point about Adam,I have always thought he is a good footballer but never given a decent run in his best position @ CM due to a lot of reasons, but I actually think he could have been a good player for us,all this talk of him,''always looking for the Hollywood pass, and Hollywood shot '', well for me Mendes does exactly the same but gets away with it, why ?,I don't know, maybe because he is Portugese.

As for Burke, well considering how little I've seen of him, apart from highlights, since he moved to Cardiff I don't think he is playing any better than he did for Rangers, flatters to deceive IMO.But good luck to the both of them.
