Re-naming Ibrox ?

Recommended Posts

I have to admit that being an Arsenal fan and attending home games at Highbury for a few years that calling the new stadium "Emirates" doesn't bother me at all.

Part of that could, though, be because it is a completely different stadium.

I think you've hit on a key factor there because it's not likely that the existing stadium would be renamed, but a brand new one might actually HAVE to be renamed for it to happen. I'm not saying that I want a brand new stadium in a new location, but if that had to happen under a new owner, then there would be no stopping a name change if it was part of the whole deal. Time will tell, but we're certainly not going to have money for a new stadium under a fan ownership/member scheme situation, so if that had to come to fruition you can rule out the stadium name change immediately. Or can you? - Fans own the club, the club are in the worst financial position for decades & the fans vote to sell the stadium name? Far fetched? What about Murray Park? Do we sell that too? What about the stadium? Do we sell it and lease it back like other big clubs have been forced to do? These are important questions down the road and all issues that could signal the ACTUAL (rather than 'reported') end of days for the club!!

Thats the point i was going to make. If you move to a different stadium then renaming isnt such an issue, but changing the name of a current ground doesnt go down well with fans and they revert to the previous name anyway.

Its a commercial thing so they can call it what they like if it brings in money, but Ibrox will always be Ibrox until its brought down.

Murray Park means nothing to me but is probably in more need of re-naming than anything else at the club. Ibrox on the other hand is my/our link with all those millions of fans who have stood on those slopes over many decades.

Muray Park is a club asset & it would never be acceptable to sell off an asset like that, no matter who owns the club. If we're talking about a situation where the club can benefit from it such as something better being built beforehand & MP being sold off after completion, then fine. Maybe there could be a situation where the club actually makes a profit & benefits from a deal, but who knows. I certainly can't see that happening. The right time to buy land/property is in a recession & we're supposedly just coming out of one.
