maineflyer 0
Walter Smith's signings and spend........... Alexander £0.5m Whittaker £2.5m Bougherra £2.5m Davis £4m Mendes £3m Thomson £3m Miller £2.5m McCulloch £2.5m Lafferty £4.5m Edu £2.5m Beasley £2m Velicka £1m Naismith £2m I make that £32.5m which is no small amount of money to be turning out such awful performances. No matter how desperately some try to defend him at all costs, possibly at the cost of personal credibility, Walter Smith hasn't been short of money and hasn't been able to build even a half-reasonable team. Money wasted, progress poor, course of action obvious.
Yieldshields loyal 0
Thought i would add my tuppence worth here. I stayed till the end last night - have had a season ticket for 16 years and that is easily the most disgraceful effort from Manager and players i have had the misfortune of watching at Ibrox. Can i add this for disscussion on Smith, (i will try to be brief) who imo should have gone ages ago: 1) MONEY Smith lost us qualification to Champions league to Kaunas losing an estimated £15m. He then blew £10 on players who have contributed sweet FA with the very small effort of Miller as an exception. (Mendes, Lafferty, Edu, Miller). £25 million down - leaving us in a worse state financially than we were at the end of the Uefa Cup season. SMITHS FAULT 2) TACTICS A total pig-headedness or fear to change tactics....EVER. So defensive minded that we create problems for ourselves - every game we play, no matter if its Falkirk or Barcelona - Home or away. I wait to see at what stage in the first half the midfield drops back to sit in front of our defence - allowing the opposition space and time to attack us. Look at Werder Bremen at Ibrox - the only game under WS i have enjoyed - bullied, harrassed and pressured from the start. So we are capable of this football. IMO this is our biggest problem. Predictable. Dan Petrescu was having a laugh last night when he said WS surprised him with playing 1 up front - the world and his wife knows we are the only team in europe who employ this every game at home. SMITHS FAULT 3) PLAYERS Davie Weir - Since the day he signed WS has known his best days are behind him - yet no cover or understudy. Bougherra - Our standout - but where is the communication between the two after the international carry on? McCulloch - An honest guy who has less talent at CB than he has in forward positions, why o why is he our only option when Bougherra or Weir unavailable? Andy Webster - never Rangers class, but a better option than McCulloch Papac - A Centre HAlf playing at Left back Steven Smith - A Left Back playing at Left Mid when we have at least 4 others. Danny Wilson - the future we will never see. Never given a game - even the last 20 minutes against poorer opposition. Typical Smith policy on youth. Queen of the South - perfect chance - not a sniff. Rothen - Brought in to Left Mid when plenty already - played well out his depth at right mid last night!??? I wont go on... SMITHS FAULT 4) MOTIVATION Can someone explain as i'm pretty sure the media are too scared to ask Smith why the Hell we gave up against Seville at Ibrox 5 mins into the 2nd half? Nothing to do with fitness. Seville's goals were down to our shocking efforts in the 2nd half. Urziceni - the same - we hid, didnt want the ball, no pressure, NOTHING. SMITHS FAULT Also: Kevin Thomson - a joke of a player - a big tackle every now and again, but either being ruined under WS tactics or hasnt the audacity to take the team and game by the neck. Cant motivate himself or team mates. Been touted as a future Rangers captain - never. Smith must go in January, I dont know where we go after that, but even the EPL statement last week disgraces our great club. I hold him totally responsible

I actually thought is was something like: Alexander Free Whittaker £2m Bougherra £2m Davis £3.5m Mendes £3m Thomson £2.5m Miller £2m McCulloch £2.5m Lafferty £4m Edu £2m Beasley £1m Velicka £1m Naismith £2m Which adds up to £27.5M

calscot 0
But that squad won us the double last season and has us top of the league despite loads of departures and no spending in the summer - for the price of ONE top end Premiership player... You don't get much for £30M these days. Advocaat's 70M is more like £200M in today's prices.
maineflyer 0
You mean he spent the cost of one or two top Premiership players? So it's OK if he buys poor players - just so long as he spreads it around enough. Amazing.
Zappa 0
I think some of those transfer fees are slightly out. Pretty sure Beasley was only £700k or £750k & McCulloch wasn't quite £2.5m. Overall they're probably only £500k - £1m out though. As Calscot says, that overall figure is the price of one good EPL player these days. Not really sure what grounding that comparison has though, since we play in the SPL, not the EPL. :fish:

Norris Cole 0
When the Walterites' resort to quibbling over whether he has spent £32.5m or £27.5m, you realise there really is no argument at all. I've said it a hundred times before and I'll keep saying it until that joyous day when he leaves the manager's office for the final time - while the club's problems run deeper than the on-field management, Rangers will not progress an inch while Walter Smith is in charge. 9IAR? Manchester? Double? History, other than for the delectation of the Head In The Sand Loyal. We are going backwards at an alarming rate. A complete fucking shambles.
