Andy Webster cannot return to Rangers in January

Recommended Posts

The world's governing body for football has ruled that one-year loan deals cannot be terminated. "If it's a season-long loan, it cannot be terminated in order to bring players back,"

Far be it for me to doubt the word of Muff, but if that's a lift from a FIFA guideline, it's the most informal statement they've ever put out. Sounds a lot more like someone Scottish talking, which makes me suspicious straight away!

I agree that it 'looks' like it might be a quote from an unofficial source, but you only have to go to page 16 in the following FIFA document to see that it is indeed the case - Regulations on the Status and Transfers of players (October 2009)

It would take special circumstances for the loan deal contract to be broken & us being short of CB cover is NOT what would be considered as a special circumstance or 'just cause' as the regulations call it.

But you can loan a player in exceptional circumstances. Would it not be a bit odd not to be able to cancel a loan in such circumstances?

Would us asking for Webster back from loan really be "exceptional circumstances" though ?

No, definitely not. Something could possibly be wangled if United hadn't been playing Webster. I think if a player has played in less than 10% of matches there's a get out clause which could possibly be exploited, but Webster has already played more than that out of the full seasons fixtures, never mind fixtures till January.

I was thinking more if we have injury troubles come jan.

Fair enough, I didnt see you asking it that way - saw it more as a "lets just say we have exceptional circumstances".

I doubt we would be able to get him back under that guise. Would be interesting to see how they determine it - have only really seen it done with keepers.

Plus.... we have McCulloch fitting in (rightly or wrongly) and Broadfoot on the way back - chances are the authorities would deny it anyway.
