Takeover Rumour - Gillespie, Souness and Mahdi Al Tajir

Recommended Posts

IMO, this particular version of the consortium takeover rumour was born courtesy of our good friends at the Sunday Times & the BBC. In April, the Times named Al Tajir as Scotland's richest man & the 18th richest man in the UK. The beeb published the following - Water tycoon 'Scotland's richest'. Any Rangers takeover rumour needs a money man & in the case of the Souness led consortium rumours, someone had the not-so-bright idea to go for Scotland's 'richest' man Al Tajir as the financial backer. The rumour is an epic fail though, since Al Tajir might be rich, but the former UAE Ambassador to the United Kingdom is also 77 or 78 years old & SDM wouldn't sell the club to a consortium financially backed by a man who could kick the bucket any day.

I also seriously doubt any involvement of Graham Gillespie in a Rangers takeover because he's had his fingers in other pies & ventures with SDM for many years.

Who is Graham Gillespie BTW?

He's an MIH man with a mining background, involved with SDM for a long time.

For those who don't already know, SDM & Graham Gillespie started a company (which is housed in the same Edinburgh building as MIH companies) many many years ago called New Brannock Limited. NBL planned to build a country club, hotel, golf and sports complex as well as a couple of hundred luxury homes on a 400 acre plot of land that was a former opencast mine in North Lanarkshire. It was to be called Torrance Park. Well over a decade later, the development is just gathering a semblance of momentum, but it's about as speedy as watching paint dry. The golf course was built years & years ago, but has only this year been opened to golfers, still isn't finished, doesn't have a club house, has drainage problems & the rest of the planned development is still not underway. It's a venture that must have been a long standing & costly headache for SDM & Graham Gillespie since their original plans were rejected over a decade ago & it took them a LONG time to get them approved, although I'm not even certain that they've got them ALL approved yet. It's yet to be seen what comes of it, but their plans were made during a boom & we're now in a slump, which is a pretty big issue when you're talking about such a massive development including a couple of hundred luxury homes.
