Ordered To Party & Miss A Game

Recommended Posts

Wilson Palacios will miss Tottenhams game at Portsmouth tomorrow after being ordered to party by his countrys ruling military junta.

Palacios played a key part in the 1-0 win at neighbours El Salvador that earned Honduras their first World Cup spot since 1982.

The win, coupled with Costa Ricas failure to hold onto a two goal lead over the USA in Washington, earned Honduras an automatic place in South Africa and sparked scenes of wild jubilation.

But while Spurs boss Harry Redknapp expected Palacios to fly back in time to return to training today, the midfielder and his team-mates were out under pressure from the recently-installed government to attend a celebration party in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa.

Interim President Roberto Micheletti, who came to power when elected President Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a military coup in June, demanded the players head home.

Micheletti is under pressure from the international community, including the USA, to step down but hopes to ride on the back of the World Cup success to stay in charge of the Central American country.

And that meant Palacios had no option but to delay his flight by 24 hours, with Redknapp writing him out of the frame for his return mission at Fratton Park.

Redknapp, who has been boosted by the training ground returns of Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King and Michael Dawson, said: ââ?¬Å?Weââ?¬â?¢ve got no choice but to go to Portsmouth without Wilson.

ââ?¬Å?Thereââ?¬â?¢s nothing he can do either. I guess when the President tells you to do something, you canââ?¬â?¢t do much about it.ââ?¬Â
