Rangers set to swoop for France winger Jerome Rothen on loan

RANGERS were last night on the brink of signing French internationalist Jerome Rothen.

The Ibrox club and Paris Saint Germain have agreed a year-long loan and Rangers are confident of beating tonight's 5pm transfer deadline. Walter Smith moved quickly as soon as he heard the 31-year-old left winger's move to Schalke had fallen through yesterday.

Rothen was supposed to sign a three-year deal from which PSG would get 2million euros. But the deal collapsed and the French club contacted Rangers' chief executive Martin Bain, who had forged contacts with PSG when they met during the close-season tournament at the Emirates.

One or two details have still to be finalised with the player whose star is on the wane but heseesamove toRangersand ChampionsLeaguefootballas awaytore-ignite hiscareer.

While with Monaco he was tipped for a glittering career but over the last couple of seasons his boyhood dream of playing with PSG has soured.

He was a member of the French squad in Euro 2004 and although he was left out for a spell he regained his place for Euro 2008.

Regarded as a dead-ball expert he could be the answer to Smith's prayers. The manager has been searching for a left-sided player and if Rothen can rediscover his finest form both Rangers and he could benefit greatly.

Rothen reached the Champions League final with Monaco five years ago and although PSG's head coach Antoine Kombouare believes it is best if the player moves on he says he wouldn't be too upset if he stayed on and tried again in Paris.

But that isn't going to happen and although a few English clubs and St Etienne have been monitoring his situation it looks as though he will be at Ibrox for the next year.

And that, of course, should please Rangers fans who have been disappointed by the club's lack of action on the transfer front.

Fingers crossed, good player IMO...........

Yeah, he should sign today on loan. Good, experienced player who could make a difference on our left hand side. Saturday's match at Ibrox showed we could do with some width and while players like Naismith, Fleck and Miller can play there reasonably well, a genuine winger would help.

Hopefully Beasley should leave as well and I'd be happy with that like for like change in our squad.

I'm liking the sound of that. We haven't had a dead-ball expert since Albertz and Gio were at the club.

31 years of age is a decent age. I actually thought he was nearer to 35 which wouldn't have surprised me. Fingers crossed he can fill the gap left by the likes of Neil McCann and Jorg Albertz.

Fraser, you're needing your head checked if you think we're fine for cover at CB.

Waning star. Lost his way. Antoine Kombouare believes it is best if the player moves on . His boyhood dream of playing with PSG has soured.

One hell of a lot of negatives there to overcome. This does not really fill me with confidence. Still a chance to start anew and prove his doubters wrong. Lets hope we get some good luck for a change.

SSN confirm Rothen is to sign. In other news, Beasley to Olympiakos is off because the Greek transfer window has closed apparently?

Now if we can sign a centre-half today, whether for the starting XI or cover, then I really fancy our chances of the title again.

I take it the chances of signing Tonel are slim to fuck all?

Allowing Webster to leave on loan was a mistake. However, hopefully Rangers have the option of terminating the loan deal if we become short of cover at the back (moreso than at the present time).

Not sure if it was a mistake, given that even when he was fit last season, Walter played McCulloch at the back rather than turn to Webster.

Is Mark Reynolds a CB? Wouldn't be surprised if we went back in for him as cover.

Is Reynolds a one-season wonder? He was apparently pish last season.
