Alexander treated harshly - Smith

How can you say McGregor is the better keeper and say Alexander has not put a foot wrong. I agree Alexander has not put a foot wrong but i remember McGregor being very shaky last season and flapping at balls on a regular basis. The season before last i agree McGregor was immense.

I meant he's a better keeper in terms of talent and potential. I agree that last season he was a little shaky and, in fact, I heard a pre-match comment from McCoist that, whilst Alexander can consider himself hard done by, McGregor knows that if he doesn't meet the standards they know he can reach, Alexander will replace him.

I can't really believe you pick your team for commercial reasons, if so it is even worse management than i thought. Surely Alexander's confidence would have to be taken into account with a decision like that.

You not been reading that we still need money, badly ? And it may have as much to do with SDM as Walter if that is the case.

If it was taken for putting McGregor in the shop window then it wont affect Alexander that badly.

We'll know by the end of the transfer window but personally I don't buy the 'putting him in the shop window' argument. He's a player of (recent) international class, he's performed at Champions League and UEFA Cup level and has won domestic honours. I don't see how playing a couple of matches between now and the end of the month is going to attract new buyers. Those who want him, will know of his ability already.

Fair point stewarty but he also hadnt played since boozegate. He still had/has questions to answer.

I hope putting McGregor back between the sticks is a temporary move to get him punted before the transfer deadline. If it isn't Alexander should, and probably will, put in a transfer request. If this is a long-term decision then I just can't get my head round it.

McGregor is 4-5 years younger.

And imo slightly better.

Better long term to keep the younger guy who we'll get more years out of?

From what i have been reading in the transfer gossip columns there are no mention of any clubs who could pay that kind of money looking for a keeper. Newcastle were said to be interested in shagger last season but won't pay the money we would want now they are in the Championship. Spurs(also linked last season) are trying to get money together for a midfielder(reputed to be Brown) but must sell first for any new transfers. I don't see us selling a keeper before the end of the month to be honest.

McGregor wasn't without his on-field flaws last season and, while perhaps capable of the more outstanding saves, is not as reliable as Alexander IMO. He is also a ned and part of a lingering culture of indiscipline at the club that needs completely eradicated. Thirdly, despite all of the above McGregor is worth more in the transfer market than Alexander, therefore the only credible reason for putting McGregor back in the team is to get him in the shop window before Aug 31.

Considering the club's financial position we can't afford to keep McGregor and Alexander (both of whom I'd be happy to keep and play).

One should go so we can sign another central defender with the money (as well as another back-up goalie obviously).
