It is a squad game but the main focus should be on improving the starting XI. Getting rid of those who havent proven their worth makes sense. Replacing them gives you a chance to get players in who MAY prove more worthy. I would caveat that by saying that it does sometimes take players to settle so you sometimes need to be gun-shy when making these decisions and not make them after a 6 month time-span or sometimes even a year. New players should, IMO, be given 18 months to prove their worth, that should be ample. Less and it is a risk you lose a player who COULD have done the job. A compact squad is fine by me but again the risk is injury and suspension and then having to rely on the younger players - all the more reason to give those youngsters playing time when possible (CIS cup and when beating teams convincingly - for instance, being up 2-0 at HT against a very poor Accies team should have been the signal to get one or two of the youngsters in for playing time).
