Gazza_8 233
Obviously in that situation I understand the frustration. I just think sometimes fans aren't appreciating what's going on on the field and get pissy if every ball isn't going forward. That's not to say that there aren't legitimate times to be frustrated. The fans sitting up in the stands have a better view than the players on the field. We overlook the whole pitch seeing players in tonnes of space with their arms outstretched shouting for the ball. What they (fans) sometimes forget (myslef included) in the heat of a match is that a payers view of the pitch can be blocked by opposition players.

Gazza_8 233
What exactly has changed though,I mean we have the same players ?. Are you asking us, the fans or Walter Smith? In the back of my mind I've got a horrible feeling that we played like that tonight because it was a friendly. I hope I'm wrong!

That's what I'm thinking, let's not get too excited by '' friendlies '',let's see how we perform in the SPL & CL, not trying to put a downer on what seems to have been a good performance tonight against an EPL team full of big money buys, and having not seen the game I am just interested in why all of a sudden we are playing at a level that we haven't for years, maybe it was just a daft question
craig 5,199
The defence does worry me and the thought of LM being used as a backup centre-half frightens me. Personally, I think WS has ear-marked LM to cover the centre-half position if/when Weir gets injured. If we can get another CB in who like Cueller and Boogie is a natural in that position then I'd be very confident going into the new season. This going backwards to go forward idea is good if there's not an attacking pass on but last season, Davis in particular, when the ball was played into his feet his 1st touch was always back to our goal and more often than not his 2nd touch would be backwards also. This was when there was an option for a forward pass. I think that's what frustrates the fans S_A. I have no problem with going backward if there's no obvious forward pass on. That's how the european teams do it. Like Craig said, if you have the ball the opposition can't score. Edit: On a sidenote, this was Adams mistake. He;d more often than not try and ridiculous forward pass when nothing was on in the hope it would come off and the fans would think he was a briliant passer. Sometimes the fans appreciate the easier things. I think you would have been impressed with Davis tonight then Gav. Playing CM he did a lot of good stuff and very rarely went backwards. Thought he had a very good game, and always got involved with our decent play.

Also, like you, I'm not wanting to put a dampner on tonight win but Man City have been shit all pre-season. :fish:
UCF2008 0
Good game to watch. We were maybe a little fortunate to get the win when a draw would have been a fairer result. Our second goal in particular was different class and makes me think that Davis needs to play in the middle from now on. Whether that's in a midfield 3 or 5 probably depends on the opposition.

I'm a huge fan of Davis I just wish someone would batter that backwards 1st touch nonsense he seems to have picked up.

In the back of my mind I've got a horrible feeling that we played like that tonight because it was a friendly. I hope I'm wrong! Same here. We can but hope though. I fear we will revert to type during the rigours of the SPL. But the pace at which we played was encouraging and I doubt many SPL teams would relish us playing against them like that. At least we are playing some nice stuff, even if just pre-season. I guess we will find out a week on Saturday though.

Depends though..... A backwards 1st touch can be very effective if played right. If you play it as an opposition player is coming towards you and as soon as you have played it you continue forwards past that player, he wont have the reaction speed to turn round and get back in position.
