Goalkeeper Kenny fails drugs test

Recommended Posts

Sheffield United have suspended Paddy Kenny for failing a drugs test, BBC Radio Sheffield reports.

Kenny tested positive for a banned substance, ephedrine, following last season's Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Preston.

Ephedrine is believed to be present in a cough mixture that the Republic of Ireland international is understood to have bought over the counter.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper could face a lengthy ban.

The club, the Football Association and UK Sport have so far refused to comment over the matter.

Surely if he bought cough medicine and he had a cold then that's reasonable cause to have it in your system.

However, he's probably bought it feeling fine knowing the drug is in it,.

Many Ephedrine based products have been banned in the US - some baseball players died due to taking ephedra

But we're in the UK so what's the problem?

The FA, UEFA and FIFA need to outline things like more.

Its scary to think a player cant go into a chemist and buy cough mixture! What if you wake up around 1am with a stinking cough, cold or flu and you need to take to help you sleep!!

If this is the truth and he did only buy for a cough then its shocking if he gets a ban even if he does play for Sheff Utd!

Is that because there is something in the product that an athelete (not that Kenny is an athelete) shouldnt take? or was that due to overdose?

Alan Baxter, an Olympic medalist for Britain at the winter Olympics had his medal taken off for use of an illegal substance. The reason? The same nasal spray had different chemicals in it in the US compared to the Uk version.

Not due to overdose - ephedra is a dietary supplement (I THINK it reduces appetite), problem being that it causes a racing heartbeat that can cause severe medical problems. Is also considered, obviously, to be performance-enhancing.
