Pick your team for next season's opener

Recommended Posts

Who would you like to see in the starting XI for the first fixture of the 2009/10 season? Based on the current squad, transfer speculation and any signings you'd like to see? (Keep it fairly realistic, but just a bit of fun).

McGregor

Whittaker Bougherra New CB Papac

Thomson

Davis Mendes

New player_______Brunt

Boyd

I'd like to see a new partner come in for Bougherra, but need to have a think about who. Possibly Whitbread I guess. Also need a wide right midfielder or attacking winger type player. Unless we stick with 4-4-2 and put Davis out there and give Boyd a partner.

To be honest i feel spending money on a RB at this point is not essential. We can get by with Whittaker, Broadfoot and Lowing. A CB is essential and hopefully we can bring in another Cuellar or Madjid. CB and LM\W are essential for me. While i am not a Boyd fan i will admit without his goals we would not be champions. He really is an enigma.

With players that are on our books and what i think is essential:

Alexander

Whittaker

Bougherra

New

Papac

Neighsmith

Davis

Mendez

New

Lafferty

Boyd

Obviously if Edu or Thomson are fit they will play.

As much as I'm glad Weir has signed an extension, I'm not sure about his lack of pace when it comes to the Champions League games. I'd like to think we'll have a back up or replacement CB by August.

And buggered if I know how my midfield will work, but those are the best four midfielders at the club. I'd quite like to see us sign a winger. However Walter does it though, he should build the team around our new captain Kevin Thomson.

I never picked Edu or Thomson because it would seem they are not going to make the first game. The thread heading is the first game.

I would go with your team up to the point you hit your midfield. And then I had a wry smile as I saw your "buggered if I know" comment as that was the first thing I thought too when I saw that 4.

However, I have been thinking since Edu emerged that we could utilise a 4-2-3-1 formation with Edu and Thomson holding (both given turns to make forward runs, so long as one sits back) and with a 3 of Davis, Mendes & AN Other (new signing) supporting a front 1 (Boyd or Lafferty or Miller or Novo).

I like that type of formation because both Thomson and Edu are pretty good at joining the attack and would be hard to defend against when they alternate it. Mendes I feel would be more effective if he was the creative force, trying to find that defence-splitting pass. Davis has done pretty well recently and being allowed to play on the right side of an advanced 3 allows him to cut inside (so long as he realises his responsibility is to assist his RB too) and then perhaps Brunt for the left side ?

Obviously we wouldnt need, or want, to adopt this formation consistntly though.

If I'm joining you in pedantry, the first post actually says who would you like to see... :fish:

Walter picks four centre halfs and plays them across the back, then picks four centre-mids and plays them across the midfield. We have to get away from that. I'd love to see us sign a couple of real nippy bastards to play out wide, albeit a tad more heavyweight than Beasley. It may even be a requirement when coming up against teams of Champions League calibre, when you need a bit of X factor to grab points - Lovenkrands in 2005/06 being a decent example (hell, even Charlie Adam's strike v Stuttgart was out of the top drawer). Unfortunately pace is an expensive commodity in football these days. I also can't see Walter modifying his formation/tactics to accommodate two such players.
