The Mackems are hoping to land the Northern Ireland international midfielder with a bid of £5 million...

According to a report in the British tabloid The Daily Star, Sunderland are looking to bring Rangers' Steven Davis back to the English Premier League during the close-season.

The 24-year-old rose through the youth ranks at Aston Villa and made over 90 first-team appearances for the Midlands-based club before moving to the Gers, via Fulham, last summer.

It is reported that newly appointed Mackems manager, Steve Bruce, will be given £50 million for acquisitions this summer, following the takeover of the club by American billionaire Ellis Short.

Apparently, Bruce is hoping to use £5m of his kitty to persuade the Scottish giants to part with the 34-time capped Northern Ireland international midfielder Davis, as he looks to strenghen his squad before the start of the 2009/10 season.
