Novo For Scotland WTF Not ?

Recommended Posts

I don't know how you can get racial discrimination for not choosing foreigners for your national team... A national team is by definition racial discrimination, so maybe we shouldn't have them at all.

What each country has to do is choose it's own selection criteria within FIFA and UEFA rules. I think Scotland deserves much credit for being proud of our heritage and being the slowest country in watering down the selection process just to gain an advantage which sometimes makes a mockery of the whole raison d'etre.

We were the last to start to use the Grand Parent rule which was started by Bertie Vogts and we don't use naturalised players.

I don't agree you should need be born in Scotland as if you have a Scottish parent you have the blood and can be brought up to be very patriotically Scottish - Richard Gough is a good example. However, in such cases, Scotland should be your first and only choice.

I think the main trouble with Nacho is that he has no real desire to play for Scotland and to feel Scottish. He just wants an international career because Spain have snubbed him. I'd bet a lot of money if Scotland and Spain both called him up for his first cap in the next few months, he'd choose Spain. He's proud to be Spanish and so has no business playing for anyone else.

The ironic thing is that as far as I know he's not even become a British National yet. He would only do so to play for Scotland for his own personal gain. He doesn't feel Scottish or British enough to just become British whether he is picked or not.

We're only talking about a guy who is "eligible" for British citizenship which is actually incredibly presumptuous.

BTW did anyone really feel proudly patriotic about Rusedski or Zola Budd? Or do you get far more pride from Andy Murray and Chris Hoy?

I don't see any problem with it myself if it's in the rules we can select other players from other countries but only if they improve us. I can't see us qualifying for a major competition in the near future or for some time actually so if these players could help us do that then it's fine by me............

I think we should be focussing our energy on improving the way youths are taught football in this country and developing them rather than trying to find players who aren't good enough for their own country but are eligible to play for Scotland.

Its reminiscent of the way Ireland used to select players. Do we really want that?

How on earth can we ever compete in any qualifier nevermind major tournament with players who dont cut the grade at the better nations in our continent? Teams we may be up against?

As much as i like Novo, we already have players who are Scottish who can do his job. Im not convinced of him as a winger at all, he can't hold down a game for Rangers every week and would become a squad player. He doesn't get a game before Boyd or Miller, how is that going to change when Burley makes his selection?

I do think there is a case for people who have adopted this place as their home, of course - but not to players who would have preferred to play for their national team (which Nacho stated a couple of years back his desire to impress the Spain manager when he netted 25 goals).

I agree with QueensXI...

As a Rangers fan, I'd love to see the passion and energy of Novo in the right side of the Scotland team. However, as NC says, his passion and energy would quickly be eroded as those with an agenda hounded him out.

As a Scotland fan, I'd prefer we concentrated on home-grown talent and didn't resort to foreigners to supplement our squad. Lets persevere with the Morrison lad.

Some great points here! I do agree that Novo isn't for Scotland, but I don't agree with the home nations agreement in an international game littered with countries taking full advantage of the rules. I definitely question the legitimacy of the agreement, such that if a Scotland manager wanted to break it, he'd be able to do so. He probably wouldn't be in the job for long though.

As i said before it is only Scots for me with one exception, i would say that a person who has arrived in Scotland at a young age and come through the youth ranks should also qualify.

Presume you mean James Morrison from WBA? Think he was selected on the grandparent rule - so are you not contradicting yourself here? Agree with your 2nd paragraph though.
