Transfer Ins and Outs - Summer 2009

I think Weir should be taken off the list Frankie. He's been offered a new contract by Rangers......

Until we know they've officially been freed then players shouldn't be on that list.

It's easy to say that but there are plenty of young players that fans think look good, get released and do hee haw.

Ashikodi is a typical example. In fact look up all the youngsters we've released in the past couple of years and you'll struggle to find much success.

I've explained before about the law of averages meaning we will always struggle to produce players of Rangers standard - just like every team in Europe. We're talking about the top 5% of players or better.

It seems people really do expect miracles.

Easy to say what? Read my last sentence and look at the smilie silly.

So how come Man U and Arsenal keep producing youngsters when they also spend money on the arshavins and Berbatovs? It must be a damn sight more difficult to get into their team/squads. Considering tha lack of cash available to us we should be the no. 1 destination for any smart young player. Or is the coaching standard at Murray Park to be found wanting? In that case what's the point of Kenny McDowall? Thought he was meant to be great with young players.

How long has Murray Park been up and running? We have had very few youngsters even get near the grade. Yes Fleck is on the verge, and there are some others. Next season I think they will be getting there big chances. I cannot see any money for buying, so we will need to utilise our younger talent. I hope they are ready for the challenge. And I especially hope that the fans are ready to encourage rather than make scape goats.

To be fair, McDowall served his apprentiship with youth football before graduating to first team duties when Smith brought him into the Rangers set up. (Though I think he may have had first team involvement at Celtic). His main role at Ibrox is first team duties.

I however I do agree we should be producing more youngsters, whilst also agreeing with Calscot's suggestion that we expect to much. There is a happy medium imo.

As I said in a previous debate, even if we are not producing Rangers first team quality, some of our youths should at least be bringing in a proper fee. Look at the money man u get for selling youths who never really played in the first team and then look at us letting McCormack ( a guy who scored in the CL) go for sod all!! The failing is not just with youth development, is it with the money men (Bain?) again.

Should have commented on this in my post above too.

I think there is a misconception about Murray Park being some kind of youth development centre. It is Glasgow Rangers all inclusive training complex for all squads. The problems in youth development go far deeper than a lack of bricks and mortar prior to Murray Park and the lack of youths coming through should be considered as a problem from before the inception of this facility and not as a failing of this facility.

Ally - it IS relevant because the old pre-MP argument went that we could not develop youngsters because of the poor facilities; now that we have good facilities (for all squads not just youth) then we should be able to attract good quality with the promise of earlier promotion to first team than would be possible at say Manure or Arsenal. Take a look at the columns of The Herald this week - it's full of names that could develop into 'stars.' So why aren't they being given the chance? I just cannot accept that it's because they are no good.

I'm not sure anyone can compare to Alex Ferguson who is one of the best managers of all time but the fact is that Man U and Arsenal can attract top youngsters from England and all over Europe while our catchment area is much smaller.

We have some foreign kids but mostly Scots and to be fair, our youth teams have been doing pretty well competitively at home and so we ARE producing some of the best kids in the country. The problem is that most are still not quite good enough for Rangers - and we are a fussy lot remember.

It has still produced the likes of MacGregor, Brown, Ross, Hutton, Malcolm, Smith, Burke, Namouchi, Adam, Fleck, McLean, McCormack and others. Not too many greats but a stead flow of ok's.

Your arguement though is built on a flawed premise.

Youth development is not dependent on facilities imo.

Sure excellent facilities, if used correctly may help. However, if the coaches, coaching structure, scouting and numerous other facilities are there it doesn't matter what facilities you have.
