Striker's goalscoring form

Recommended Posts

Is looking pretty promising during Weir's reign as captain. Under the veteran defender we have gone on a 5 game run of victories, since Fergie last captained the side against Hearts in a 2-2 draw, including today's victory that put us into the Scottish Cup Final.

The run of results being:

Falkirk 0-1 Rangers

Boyd

St Mirren 2-1 Rangers

Boyd, Edu

Rangers 3-1 Motherwell

Velicka, Boyd 2(1pen)

Hibs 2-3 Rangers

Whittaker, Velicka, Edu

Rangers 3-0 St. Mirren

Velicka, Boyd, Miller

The strikers are firing well. 5 goals in 5 games for Boyd. The Boyd, Velicka partnership in the 3 games they have started together has produced 6 goals. Miller back fit again is among the goals too. :rfc:

What exactly has that got to do with Weir like?

Started writing a bit about our overall form since he took over. Then decided it was the striker's form that was the real story but couldn't be arsed to edit it all. :o

It's not really so much about Weir but the reaction since the international fall out and the positive effect that has had on various aspects of our game; results, Boyd's performances overall, edu, the striker's all getting goals. Boozegate/Weir getting the captaincy, since then there's been noticeable improvements within the squad.

Basically was just reviewing the recent fixtures, taking Weir's reign as captain as my arbitrary starting point and saying the strikers are hitting (goal)scoring form at the right time. :D

Sorry for the grumpy response SA! Came on just after Man U had equalised and if you read eslewhere that upset me slightly!!

Velicka has come in and hit form at just the right time from our point of view and Miller coming back in and grabbing a goal was good to see too. With the OF game coming up we need Miller an Velicka on form as Boydy will no doubt be left on the bench again:confused: I thought Edu was our best Player today and he has really shone in the weeks since replacing Fergie. Lets hope the Strikers can keep it up and lead us to Title 52 :rfc:

Was bored and was looking at our goalscorer stats this season and then wondered what the Tims were:

Boyd 29 goals in 40 games. 1 goal every 1.38 games.

Miller 11 in 31. 1 goal every 2.82 games.

Lafferty 8 in 26. 1 goal every 3.25 games.

Velicka 4 in 7. 1 goal every 1.75 games.

Novo 7 in 32. 1 goal every 4.6 games.

McDonald 17 in 41. 1 goal every 2.41 games.

Hesselink 5 in 25. 1 goal in every 5 games.

Samaras 16 in 37. 1 in every 2.31 games. (On a side not noticed after the 2 he got v Dundee United at the start of Jan, it was 14 games til his next goal!!! Unsure how many were as sub).

These comparisons may be harsh on Novo/Lafferty who have either played as a sub or a wide midfielder a lot, but threw them in for interests sake.

Despite the above they've scored more goals.

Even though Davis and Mendes have chipped in with a couple, and Edu who's return from his few starts is encouraging, we really need the midfielders and perhaps even defenders (set peices etc) contributing more in this respect.

Update from the first post:

Falkirk 0-1 Rangers

Boyd

St Mirren 2-1 Rangers

Boyd, Edu

Rangers 3-1 Motherwell

Velicka, Boyd 2(1pen)

Hibs 2-3 Rangers

Whittaker, Velicka, Edu

Rangers 3-0 St. Mirren

Velicka, Boyd, Miller

Hearts 2-0 Rangers

Velicka, Boyd

4 games in the last 4 for Velicka.

6 in 6 for Boyd.

8 in the 4 they have started as a pair.

Miller looking effective from the bench. Scored as a sub the other week, assist for the clincher today.

Lafferty making his return today.

The forwards are all hitting form and fitness at the right time. :rfc:

Boyd and Velicka might not be pretty to watch at times. They might not show much in the way of pace and ability. But they don't half win you games. :D

Been reading through a thread with some comprehensive Boyd stats elsewhere and came across an interesting one.

He has played 52 games (inc. 13 as sub) v top 6 opposition, scoring 30 goals (6 pens) in total. 25 of these games (8 as sub) were away from home and he has scored 11 goals (3 pens).
