Old Firm possibly to the EPL

Old Firm move could save some English clubs from oblivion, says Preston chairman Derek Shaw

Apr 21 2009 By Chris Roberts

PRESTON chief Derek Shaw last night claimed the Old Firm joining the English Premier League would save some clubs from extinction.

The Deepdale chairman has thrown his weight behind Bolton chief Phil Gartside's revolutionary proposals to invite Celtic and Rangers into the new-look Premiership 2.

Shaw told Record Sport the global recession was hitting Championship clubs more than most but says the prospect of more revenue through the turnstiles when the Scottish giants visit could keep them afloat.

He said: "It costs a hell of a lot of money to survive at this level, especially at this moment in time. You hear of clubs struggling all the time and gates being down so we are all feeling the bite.

"Clubs can only be helped in surviving with something like this that is going to increase attendances."

To highlight Shaw's point the Lancashire club pulled in 21,000 for a clash with local rivals Blackpool at Deepdale this month - double what they get for most other sides.

He said: "If we were in a league with a Rangers and a Celtic, I am sure that would be two full houses every season.

"Cash is king to Preston. We had a full house against Blackpool recently and doubled our takings on just one day.

"That is what we have to look at because we are in the entertainment business and if there was a new structure formed that is better entertainment for the paying customer then it has to be looked at."

It's all pie in the sky, and I would not like to see it happen, don't get me wrong the financial side of it is the only interesting bit,but it won't happen IMO

Yip, too many clubs down in England who would stand to loose to much money - it would be turkeys voting for Xmas.

Maybe this is the reason for Celtc (and Rangers) asking if they can field their reserve teams in the SFL. Rangers have always stated that if they moved into a European or other league they would ensure that they would have a team left in Scotland.

Just read a post putting this in another way. What would Rangers and Celtic be saying if English teams wanted to come to Scotland to contend our CL places.

As long as they all came i suppose it would be okay but if only Bolton applied then i think they would get booted into touch.

Well chairman's Old Firm exit fears

Motherwell chairman John Boyle has voiced his concerns over suggestions that Celtic and Rangers might move to the English Premier League.

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside is keen to invite the Old Firm duo down to England in a restructuring of the Premier League.

Gartside is proposing plans for a two-tier top-flight competition, with Celtic and Rangers joining the second tier.

Boyle is wary of any such move and admits he would want Motherwell to make the switch south to England if Celtic and Rangers are allowed to leave the SPL.

He told the Daily Record: "I'd find it inconceivable that the rest of us would watch the Old Firm go down to England and simply say, 'cheerio then, best of luck'.

"If the lines are to be re-drawn and two Scottish clubs go down south, I'd be interested in taking Motherwell into the English Third Division.

"We've got big city clubs like Hearts and Hibs who could prosper in a British set-up as well.

"We could find ourselves playing in a league where the financial structure doesn't make a pair of clubs significantly richer than the rest.

"If we're going to have a once-in-a-generation change to the game, let's examine all the possibilities.

"But the consequences of losing Celtic and Rangers without any further break-up of the SPL would be disastrous from top to bottom for the game as a whole.

"It would bring about the demise of Scottish football as it stands.

"I can see the Old Firm would bring credibility to a second tier of the Premier League down south but there's no doubt we need them here for financial reasons.

"My hope is the clubs in England who'll debate this issue on Thursday regard the whole matter as a flight of fantasy and throw the idea out of court.

"The Premier League in England is the most successful competition in the world and I don't think the turkeys will vote for Christmas so the Old Firm can one day get a share of the goodies."

Sadly, if it increased revenue, I believe that our chairman would be all for it. Lets not forget what drives our custodian.

What drives our custodian is certainly not revenue or profit, it's actually success for Rangers (without him spending his own money) whether you like it or not.

Unfortunately, he's not very driven when it comes to Rangers at the moment.
