There have been plenty of players signed for Rangers that we have looked at and could't believe we signed, yet funnily enough almost always it's these players who over perform and win over the fans.

More than that, it tends usually to be the big signings like Kyle Lafferty who disapoint or take an age to do something constructive.

I think this may be due to "butter side down" psychology. A low key, free signing and a high profile, expensive signing could both take a while to setting and then start producing the goods. The cheap guy will be appreciated while the expensive guy will be a disappointment and deemed to have taken too long to get it together.

It's all about expections.

What i don't want to see is us signing him and him rotting away in the reserves. If that were to happen i'd rather he stayed with St.Mirren and continued to impress for tham.

As long as the game only allows 11 players on the pitch and large clubs mitigate form, injuries and suspensions with large squads of 25 or more plus youngsters, there will ALWAYS be a few players who lose out and "rot in the reserves".

To expect otherwise is incredibly naive in my opinion. You can't play ALL your players and when managers do, ironically it's the same fans who then complain about not having a settled team.

The amount of complaints when a player doesn't get a game when it's most probably down to a combination of form, fitness, attitude and competition for places. Then the same fans bitch about the same players when they get a few games and don't play so well.

I always thought the reserve team was where you got back to full match fitness AND showed why you should be in the first team. Many players who don't get a game are rotting in the reserves because they are rotten for the reserves.

In any case there will be no reserves to rot in next season.

I'd argue Gow was far more impressive at Falkirk and look at how his signing has gone. Not saying that definitely rules out Dorman being a success if he were to sign. But it is a worrying indicator.

I just don't see him cementing a starting spot and so at £700k we might be better served using a youth player in his potential place in the squad.

How about using Broadfoot as an indicator? When Gow is wowing us playing for Scotland then maybe he'll prove Walter wrong, but at the moment all he's doing is ok for a pretty low level team, and getting rewarded with a bigger wage than your average SPL player - Rangers have certainly helped there.

These sentiments for failed players remind of those X-factor contestants who tell Simon Cowell, how they'll show him and make him regret rejecting them. It will NEVER happen.

True John but at least those youths brought through wouldnt cost the club in terms of transfer fees.

Yeh, the point I was trying to make is if the guy taking up this place in the squad, be it say Dorman or a youth, is unlikely to feature much or be first choice then we would be better served going for the youth and keeping any potential transfer fees for "big" signings who will immediately be competing for or taking a starting berth.

I certainly take your point that I could equally have used Broadfoot coming in from a smaller team and settling well compared to Gow who could not make the breakthrough. Tbh it just did not occur to me. Perhaps because Gow and Dorman are forward thinking or attacking players.

Regards your second point, you misunderstand my intentions for making my post. I'm not lambasting Walter for not giving Gow a chance. Quite the opposite. What I was saying is if Gow, a player who imo had a better season at Falkirk than Dorman has had at St Mirren, struggled when he arrived at Rangers it is realistic to suggest Dorman may find it as hard or even harder. No blame attached to the management for this (well aside from buying a player who isn't good enough :whistle:). I am in full agreement it is up to the player to prove they are good enough once here. I merely suggest if Gow found it hard then Dorman might too prove a wasted signing.

I think Gow's case is an exception rather than the rule and there must be plenty we don't know about behind the scenes for him to become so far out of Smith's plans. Same with Hemdani.

Everyone else has pretty much had a chance and although many would like to see Furman, Fleck and Aaron play more, I think it's obvious that teenagers need a bit of nurturing. It would be a bit more worrying if they were about 22.

There is much to suggest that the likes of Dorman, while not likely to immediately become a first choice like Mendes, will eventually get a chance to prove himself - although much may depend on the form, fitness and availability of his rival squad members. His own form, fitness, attitude and how he fits in in training will also be large factors.

If he doesn't make it, a lot of the reasons will be down to the player. If you play like Laudrup every week then you'll get a game, if you don't impress then your chances are slim.

Like X-factor contestants, the likes of Dorman are desperate to get the chance to make the cut, even if it eventually leeds nowhere - but he'll get a massive pay rise and signing on fee in the process.

CELTIC are ready to square up to Rangers in a £750,000 fight for Andy Dorman.

SunSport can reveal that the Hoops are keen on the on-form St Mirren midfield ace.

Dorman, below, is in the form of his life, bagging eight goals in his last 12 games.

He has just one year left on his Saints deal and has already attracted interest from both sides of the border.

Bolton and Sheffield United have been linked with him and Gers have also watched Dorman, who is 27 next week and will face them in Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

Now Gordon Strachan is understood to be considering a summer move for the English-born ace, with Shunsuke Nakamura ready to leave Celtic Park this summer and Italian flop Massimo Donati also on the way out.

Paul Hartley has still to win an extra year on a contract which expires this summer.
