Yeah because that's what we need.. another central midfielder.

Christ..

I agree, with Thomson injured, Bazza out of the picture and Hemdani for the off we definitely need another central midfielder. Furman should be back for next season and should be ready for a regular subs appearance and hopefully Thomson will be back in the team and like his old self by October.

Edu might settle in a bit more by the end of the season as he's now got himself what looks like being a regular starting slot. His goal should also help his confidence.

Dunno about Dorman, I wouldn't mind signing Bamba from Hibs, every time I have seen him he is a great physical game that we need IMO, he is a great spoiler

But Bamba undertakes the very same job that Thomson does for us. We have so many CB's and CM's we soon will be playing with a keeper and 10 CB/CM's

Oh please, don't mention Sol Bamba and Rangers in the same breathe again. He is an accident waiting to happen and we already have enough players like that.

But, Andy Dorman is a player i have tried to bring up on this forum before. Mostly i was mocked, but that may have been more because of the list of small team players i listed with his name.

I must say i have been impressed with Dorman since last season and have continued to enjoy his play this season too.

However, i do tend to agree slightly with Gav on this that it could be a waste of talent and he may end up on the road out with Alan Gow.

In saying that though i still would like him at the club as he is one player that could do a job for us at a cost we are now more suited to.

Go get him Walter!

Yeah, like all the other midfielders that Walter is playing in defence...

McCulloch? Started off playing for us at left midfield.

Anyway, you know WS likes to play players out of position. It's hardly a secret.

I'll give you McCulloch although he's hardly been a regular at the back and I would argue that Smith seems to be trying to find his "natural" position as he doesn't seem to actually have one. In that sense McCulloch is NEVER out of position!

I'd also counter that Eck and PLG played Hemdani in defence so not exactly a Smith-only phenomenon.

All managers play players "out of position" according to some fan's arbitrary interpretation of the "natural" position, quite often to great effect.

PLG and Eck played the odd player out of position, WS seems to be making a habit out of it.

McCulloch from Att/LM to CB

Stevie Smith from LB to LM

Whittaker from RB to LB

Dailly from CB to RB or Mid

To name a few.

Also, I think McCullochs natural position is striker. He played there for Motherwell and he played there for Wigan but for some reason WS plays him either LM, CM or CB.

Gav, you missed a few.....

Davis - RM, is a CM (if you listen to most folks)

Kenny Miller - has played LM this season, never a left midfielder

Fleck - apparently is a striker and not a LM.

Broadfoot - played RB but is a CB.

Papac - playing LB but is CB

Don't get me wrong, some of these are to great effect and, in some instances, players actually are better when played "out of position". Papac for instance would NEVER make my team as a CB but as a LB he is the man in possession and doing a very good job of it. Likewise Broadfoot has been very dependable at RB.

But if you have to play so many players out of position then, to me at least, it suggests that the signing policy has a large element of a "scatter-gun" approach to it.

Just look at ast pre-season. We had a fair number of CM's on the books yet only really had Whittaker on the books who is a natural full back (to give the management some slack lets also say Papac as he seems more comfortable there anyway). So the management team went out and signed a couple of full-backs for cover, right ? No, they went out and bought THREE Central midfielders.

Now, I can understand buying a CM as Ferguson was injured at the time, I could even understand buying a 2nd CM as cover - but did we really need THREE CM's when we had Thomson already there and then we would have Ferguson back from injury and we also had Hemdani ? I doubt it. I think WS gambled on being able to shift Hemdani and it backfired.

I think if players could only play in one position that would all be true but I don't think that is the case as players generally play more than one position in their careers. There is also the question of opinion about a player's natural position. Walter seems to think Papac is best at left back and who can really disagree?

Who can really say what a young players best position is? if it's where they played first then we should be playing Dailly in his "natural position" of striker.

Walter has explained about introducing young strikers on the wing as it puts them under less pressure. Eck seemed to agree with putting strikers there when you consider he put Lovenkrands, De Boer, Novo and Arveladze as well as others there. Come to think about, what about Ricksen winning player of the year at right wing?
