Now We Get To The Nitty Gritty

This has been the target since the beginning. I hope when Smith has had enough, Rangers will employ him.

Scots Fudge Again

by Ronnie Cully

AND Smith must score is a phrase which has haunted the SFA's chief executive since he failed to do just that for Brighton in the closing minute of the 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United.

Well, he is making up for it now. The only problem is it's an own goal every time he opens his mouth to try and bring closure to the Booze on the Banks affair.

Gordon Smith has ignored the sage advice that, when you find yourself in a hole - especially one of your own making - the best policy is to stop digging.

Not for the first time he has tried to make everyone believe his word is final at least until the next time he elects to open his mouth on this sorry, sorry business. It has left the SFA with a much more serious hangover than anything suffered by Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor after their seriously silly session at Cameron House the morning after the night before in Amsterdam.

DID the SFA get it wrong when dealing with Scotland stars over the Boozegate affair?

Yes

No

Don't know

First the pair were banished from the team hotel by manager George Burley. Then they were allowed to stay. Next they were out of the game against Iceland, only to be re-instated and allowed to sit on the subs' bench.

That was the end of the matter, until suddenly it wasn't thanks to the bad boys being fingered for their digit delinquency aimed at the Press photographers.

Smith's next move was to declare a line had been drawn under it all, only to find it had been crossed by his boss, SFA president George Peat, which led to Ferguson and McGregor being banned from playing for their country.

For life was the clear indication, until the announcement by Smith to say the enquiry into who-did-what-for-how-long had been completed and that it now was categorically and emphatically all done and dusted turned into another Brian Rix farce when the question was asked: Does a ban forever men forever?

Smith prevaricated like an MP being quizzed about expenses. The statement subsequently dispatched from Fawlty Hampden Towers re-emphasised that life does indeed mean life, though space had been left in the margins for maybe, perhaps, and possibly to be added at a later date.

Perhaps Smith's next move should be to announce that, after careful consideration and consultation with managers, coaches, presidents, office-bearers and barmen, from this point on SFA will stand for the Scottish Fudge Association - because fudging the issue is all they have managed to do with any consistency.

Perhaps he should look at the Czech Republic and how they dealt with a similar incident when six players indulged in a beer or 12.

Only one message came out of their FA. Manager Petr Rada and his entire backroom staff were sacked while the players involved were suspended indefinitely.

There is no appetite for fudge in the Czech Republic ... it's leaving a bad taste in the mouth here, too.

Mountains and molehills.

The truth and natural justice will appear soon as I suspect one, two, or maybe a few will fall on their sword. Wait and see.

I just hope it's not Gordon Smith. Gerry McNee on the Press Box on Setanta said that certain factions (didn't say if it included him) had been conducting a witch hunt v Smith. For years people have been sayng that we need a football person in the corridors of power and when we finally get one, what do they do?
