Rangers hopes of landing Manchester United goal hero Federico Macheda fading

RANGERS look to have lost the chance to sign Manchester United hotshot Federico Macheda on loan next season.

Ibrox chief scout Ewan Chester watched the Italian striker in action for United's second string and raved about him to Ibrox boss Walter Smith.

It's believed Smith is keen to use his close friendship with Sir Alex Ferguson to their mutual advantage next season and Rangers have already been linked with United's Brazilian teenagers Fabio da Silva and Rodrigo Possebon.

However, hopes of landing 17-year-old Macheda were dealt a blow when he fired a sensational injury-time winner against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Now "Kiko" is set to win promotion to his first-team squad for the 2009-10 season after keeping his side on track for the English title.

United reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had no doubt Macheda, snatched from Lazio youth in September 2007, would be a hit.

Solskjaer said: "Macheda is a big talent. It is not easy to leave your home country at 16 and come to a new culture.

"He is a big lad with good technique and pace and he's hungry to improve. When he gets back from sessions with the seniors he wants more because he learned so much."

Meanwhile, Lazio president Claudio Lotito has called for a change of rules to prevent home-grown players such as Macheda going abroad.

Lotito said:"We tried in every way to stop United taking our player but Italian regulations don't give you any defence.

"I talked repeatedly with his parents but we just could not compete with United's offer."

Italian clubs are prevented from tying a player under the age of 18 to a contract.

Pity he looked good.

If they have skill, guille, craft, passion, ability - we need 11 (no matter what age they are).

You'd need a manager to let them play though not hold them back. WS would probably play Macheda on the wings or midfield if he ever picked him

Then it's time we used our own ?

Agreed, if they are good enough. From what limited games I've witnessed, only Ness and Wilson look good enough (at the moment) to enhance our first team squad.
