chilledbear 16
What a torrent of abuse this lad gets, and it's down to the standard he set himself in his younger days. Still the only Scottish player, if he has possession, he will pass to another Scottish player, very unusual in this Scotland team. I would like to know when BF started pressing the ball so much, even the opposing goalkeeper. He should be a playmaker, making himself available in the central midfield, the position and role where he played some of his best games for Rangers and Scotland. Yes I think his performances have been poor this season, but I would like to see him think more about his role in the team, Rangers and Scotland.

Yes I think his performances have been poor this season, but I would like to see him think more about his role in the team, Rangers and Scotland. It's a real conundrum, this. I think he is unsure himself what his role is. With Mendes in the team, they both want to demand the ball and create -each is intimidated by the other's presence. Like Gerrard and Lampard maybe they cannot play in the same team. This is why I'd prefer to have Thomson and one other, Barry OR Mendes (or Davis). Thomson is left-footed and more of a holding player, so he complements the other perfectly. with Scotland it's a similar problem. Yesterday Brown was designated the holding player (!!), leaving Barry to hunt and harry. If he's to be a playmaker, then for Gers he needs Thommo beside him; for Scotland, he needs, dare I say it - Thomson again!!
Jon 0
Hate to say this, but Thomson aside, Brown has probably been the best midfielder in Scotland this season so far

chilledbear 16
It would help if he had a manager who told him his role, and made sure he stuck to it. Wee Dick was the only one, and I wonder if he signed Ferguson [not that he will] what way he would have BF playing.
John Barr 0
I watched Barry Ferguson play for Rangers youth teams right through to the present and i've always felt that his best position is as a defensive midfielder. Barry has some great ability to harrass forward players and isn't a bad tackler and we all know he can pick out a 50 yard pass(if he can be bothered). That's why i see him as the perfect DEFENSIVE midfielder as oppossed to a Cental or Attacking midfielder. His ability to break up attacks and ping a pass over the midfeild to our forwards was utilised more when Dick Advocaat was manager. But not as much as it should have been. However, Alex Mcleish used him further forward and in many games played him as an attacking midfielder. Here he was quite succesful scoring 16 league goals in season 2002/03. This may have been where Barry felt he was better used further up the park and believed he was more of an attacking midfielder than anything else. But as we all know, he scored only small amounts of goals after this season as he drifted through the positions of midfield for 6 more seasons. I think the addition of Mendes and Thomson to Rangers has further confused this point and as a result we are very unlikely to see anything like the Barry Ferguson of 2002, and he will continue to believe he can play further forward when infact he should be utilised as a defensive midfielder.
Jon 0
Yet his best season was with De Boer as an attacking midfiielder scoring around 20 goals? Can't be that bad. Think he is trying to take to much on and is being curailed as to what he does. At the same time, what he is doing is simnply not good enough.
John Barr 0
I think thats the same season mate that i mentioned. Your right though, you can see him perhaps over doing it on occassion leading to him looking like the preverbial headless chicken. Thers no doubt in my mind though that he has never been anywhere near what he used to be like since he returned from injury this season.
pete 2,499
Ach yes lets keep making excuses for poor Barry. Not for me. Should never have been brought back. There were far better players available for the price we paid.
Jon 0
Not excuses Pete. Simply stating facts. With De Boer he was excellent fopr us, since he came back we have had no-where near the same quality of plaer alongside him. I will conceded I expect more from him than he has deivered since his return, far more.
