With all the excitement over Cummings, Murphy and Docherty, the arrival of Russell Martin was somewhat less glamorous.
I'll admit not not seeing a lot of him over the years and even when he played for Scotland he didn't really stand out. However, with 30 caps for his country and over 300 appearances for Norwich he's clearly an experienced and useful player.
Good news is that so far I think he's looked a class above at times. Yes, now and again he can be pulled out of position (perhaps understandable given Declan John's attacking nature) but for the most part his defensive work has been very good. He's not the tallest but he's fairly good in the air and his defending usually calm, composed and clever. I think his passing is also very good generally and he'd maybe be even better on the right side of centre if we can get Alves fit.
Given he's just turned 32, I think he's shown a permanent deal would be a positive for us in the summer.
