Celtic Boys Club manager 'stuffed banknotes in boy's mouth'
ian1964 replied to ian1964's topic in General Football Chat
CELTIC has blasted claims they tried to keep the compensation settlement awarded to a former youth player who was sexually abused by Jim McCafferty a secret. The player in his 30s, who can’t be named for legal reasons, is set to receive “significant” compensation from the club after he was abused by ex-kitman McCafferty. It emerged today that the former pro-youth player had successfully raised a claim through the Personal Injury Court in Edinburgh, with Celtic admitting liability. The lawyers representing victims of the Celtic Boys Club child abuse scandal launched a blistering attack on Hoops chiefs after the settlement came to light – accusing them of “trying to keep it a secret” and “legally classifying survivors”. But the Parkhead club hit back at the statement from Patrick McGuire, a partner at Thompsons Solicitors, branding it “misleading and unjustified”. And they said they did not seek a confidentiality agreement for the case or keep it a secret. A spokesperson for Celtic FC said: “We deliberately did not comment on the news story this morning for reasons of respect for the victim of the historic abuse at the hands of Jim McCafferty. "However, we cannot let Mr McGuire’s continued misleading and unjustified attacks on the club and on our Chief Executive in the media to continue. The McCafferty settlement was based on legal advice and is evidence alone of the club’s willingness to meet its obligations. "We did not ask for a confidentiality agreement to be signed or keep this case ‘a secret’, so for Mr McGuire to suggest otherwise is completely untrue. We have, however, conducted this matter with sensitivity and discretion, which we think is the considerate and appropriate approach. "As we have made clear, the ongoing cases should be pursued through the legal process and not through the media, yet Mr McGuire appears to be more interested in writing press releases than in corresponding with our insurers or their lawyers. We respect claimants’ rights and our advisers will communicate with them and their representatives directly in the proper manner, which is precisely what our representatives are doing. “We have said very clearly and publicly that we have enormous sympathy for all victims of historic abuse, which has occurred across many different organisations. "As a club, we take our obligations and responsibilities seriously and are co-operating fully with both the authorities and the process. We consider Mr McGuire’s words therefore not just to be wholly disrespectful of what is a very sensitive legal process but also grossly inaccurate and defamatory. "We will continue to follow the proper processes, as we have done from the outset, and to meet all of our obligations." McCafferty, 73, who previously held roles at both Celtic FC and Celtic Boys Club, was jailed earlier this year after he admitted to a string of sex attacks on young boys. He became the fourth paedophile associated with Celtic Boys Club to be convicted in recent months. Frank Cairney, 83, was jailed for four years in February for preying on eight youngsters. Torbett, 71, was also caged for a second time last year for sexually abusing kids at the Boys Club. Former Boys Club chairman Gerald King, 66, was found guilty of targeting five kids but dodged jail. Celtic chiefs expressed “regret and sorrow” for abuse victims after McCafferty was convicted in May but the club has always insisted the two are separate organisations. In May, Celtic revealed they had been conducting a secret two-year probe into the child abuse scandal at Celtic Boys Club. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/scottish-news/4616355/celtic-celtic-boys-club-child-abuse-jim-mccafferty-statement/?utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=scottishsuntwitter&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1566071514 -
The Spring & Summer 2019 Transfer Rumours Thread

Man of the match - Glenn Middleton Not fully match fit but the winger on loan from Rangers had a part in two of Hibs' goals and otherwise showed flashes of the skill and pace that led Paul Heckingbottom to bring him to Easter Road. With him on one wing and Daryl Horgan on the other - both capable of playing either wide or even behind the striker, Hibs look a real attacking threat. They could do with sorting their defence out though. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49324312 -

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell lands ‘Champions League format’ role with Uefa CELTIC supremo Peter Lawwell has been appointed as one of four key men who will try and change the Champions League format...just days after the Hoops were dumped out of the competition. Neil Lennon's side slumped to a shock 5-4 aggregate defeat to Romanian minnows Cluj and were eliminated before even the play-off stages. However, one Celtic man was a winner this week....Lawwell. The Parkhead chief was named as one of four men by the European Club Association to sit on Uefa's Professional Football Strategy Council for the next four years and will be charged with changing the heavily-criticised format of the Champions League. Lawwell will join Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar, vice president of Real Madrid Pedro Lopez and Arsenal's football director Raul Sanllehi in trying to radically alter Europe's top competition. It’s faced major complaints over the qualification progress, which sees clubs like Celtic and Ajax being forced to undergo many rounds just to get into the group stages. Lawwell, who is already a member of the ECA Executive Board, was appointed at a meeting of the 246-strong organisation in Liverpool. They stated: "Our Executive Board appointed the four ECA representatives who will sit on the Uefa Professional Football Strategy Council for the upcoming cycle 2019-23. “These are Pedro Lopez of Real Madrid, Rauul Sanllehi of Arsenal, Edwin van der Sar of Ajax and Peter Lawwell of Celtic. "We have held multiple member forums and bilateral meetings. “The aim has been to debate the principles behind the vision, seek feedback and input from members and assess the best ways to develop the Uefa club competitions over the long term. "At our meeting, the Executive Board reviewed and discussed the feedback received to date. “This will be analysed further over the coming weeks, but our members have made clear that the current structure of Uefa club competitions is not serving the interests of the majority of clubs, particularly those outside of the largest domestic competitions. “ECA’s priority in the next phase of the consultation process is to work with stakeholders across football to find the best route for reform." https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/4614611/peter-lawwell-celtic-champions-league-uefa-format/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1566031689
