He certainly came onto a bit of a game after he scored and looked quite comfortable, mind you Papac has done ok filling in,but Whittaker does give you more of an attacking option, which I feel we will need against Lyon

RANGERS suffered a devastating blow when Jean-Claude Darcheville was ruled out of next week's Champions League crunch with Lyon. The Frenchman limped out of Saturday's victory over Kilmarnock with a hamstring strain and will be sidelined for three weeks. Darcheville scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win before suffering a recurrence of the same injury which forced him to miss the 3-0 victory over Lyon and the 0-0 draw with Barcelona earlier in Rangers' Group E campaign. Boss Walter Smith initially hoped the former Bordeaux hitman would be ready to lead the line against his fellow countrymen at Ibrox on Wednesday but the true extent of the damage was revealed after he had a scan at Ross Hall hospital on Monday. Rangers only need a draw to join Celtic in the last 16 of the competition although they will have to earn that precious point without their No.1 striker. Smith said: "He has a tear in his hamstring, not a bad one, but even allowing for that you are looking in the region of three weeks before he'll be back. "It's a blow to lose him again as we have only had him in fits and starts this season. "From Jean-Claude's perspective it is also a disappointing situation. He wanted to get off to a flier with us but unfortunately he's going to be out for another period." Meanwhile, Lyon have also been dealt a blow ahead of next week's vital Group E clash - with defender Patrick Muller missing the trip to Glasgow for a career saving knee operation. He will have surgery at the end of this week after damaging his knee ligaments playing a reserve clash at the weekend. The highly-experienced Swiss defender will be sidelined for six months, counting him out of Lyon's Champions League campaign and Euro 2008. Lyon already have major doubts over France No.1 Gregory Coupet, who admits time is running out for him to make his return against Gers following four months out after another knee operation.

RANGERS returned to winning ways in style as they romped to a 5-1 win against Falkirk in the SPL Reserve League at Westfield last night. After losing 3-0 in their previous game to leaders St Mirren, albeit with a young side, a more experienced line-up eased to victory over the Bairns.Alan Gow Chris Burke scored twice, Alan Gow netted against his former club and Steven Lennon and Thomas Buffel completed the rout. After second-placed Caley Thistle drew 0-0 with the Buddies in Inverness, Gers are now just a point behind the Highlanders in the standings and 11 adrift of the Paisley outfit. Ian Durrant's men took the early initiative in windy conditions, Buffel firing over and having another effort saved by Robert Olejnik before they took the lead after 24 minutes. Charlie Adam had just come close with a 20-yard effort when Buffel angled the ball into Burke's path and he drove back across goal and under the goalkeeper. Rangers went two up within as many minutes, Lennon celebrating his contract extension on Monday with his 10th reserve goal of the campaign after Olejnik spilled a Gow free kick. Steven LennonBut from a commanding position, the visitors then threw their hosts a lifeline when sloppy defending at the back allowed Carl Finnigan to nip in and score to make it 2-1 at the break. Seeing their advantage cut in half only spurred the Light Blues on after half-time and they returned with real purpose, with Buffel and Burke having opportunities. Gow restored the two-goal cushion when he poked in then Burke finished a magnificent sweeping move. Ugo Ehiogu started it off, winning the ball at the edge of his own box before Dean Furman, Kirk Broadfoot, Alan Lowing, Lennon and Gow all played their part in getting it to the scorer. Buffel sealed the win two minutes from the end, chipping Olejnik superbly from 25 yards to hammer home Gers' superiority. RANGERS: Smith, McLachlan, Ehiogu, Broadfoot, Lowing, Burke, Furman, Adam, Lennon, Buffel, Gow.

  17. Dunfermline have sacked manager Stephen Kenny with the pre-season promotion favourites languishing near the bottom of Scotland's Division One. Veteran striker Jim McIntyre becomes temporary head coach, the club website stating: "DAFC have terminated their contract with Stephen Kenny. "And, with immediate effect, Jim McIntyre becomes DAFC's caretaker." Kenny arrived from Derry City last November, but his side dropped out of the Scottish Premier League. He led the Fife outfit to the Scottish Cup final last term. And, although they reached the Scottish Football League's Challenge Cup final this season, they have slipped 21 points behind leaders Hamilton Academical in the race for promotion.
  18. MILAN have already qualified and would top the group with a win or draw. CELTIC would be certain to go through with a draw; a victory in Milan would make them group winners. SHAKHTAR must beat Benfica and hope Celtic lose in Milan to advance. BENFICA can secure a Uefa Cup place with a win, sending Celtic through.

IAN DURRANT will field a strong side as Rangers' bid to keep pace with the teams in the top half of the SPL Reserve League continues tonight at Falkirk. Thomas BuffelWhen the full first-team squad was in Germany for last week's Champions League tie with Stuttgart, a young second string - with Tommy Wilson at the helm - went down 3-0 to leaders St Mirren at Broadwood. That result left Gers 13 points adrift of the Buddies on 15 points beside Hibernian, the Bairns and Kilmarnock and with each of them in action today, it is important Durrant's men do not lose further ground. They will have high hopes of returning to winning ways this evening at Westfield, where seven members of Walter Smith's main pool are in line to play. Thomas Buffel and Chris Burke, both of whom have impressed in recent weeks, will be in action alongside Charlie Adam and Alan Gow. Ugo Ehiogu and Kirk Broadfoot will also be deployed as part of a more experienced side, with Graeme Smith replacing Calum Reidford in goals. Kick-off is at 7pm so get along to the Falkirk Stadium and support the team!

JEAN-CLAUDE Darcheville is in a race against time to be ready for Rangers' Champions League showdown with Lyon next Wednesday. The former Bordeaux striker had to come off in last Saturday's 2-0 win over Kilmarnock with a hamstring problem. A scan has revealed that there is a slight tear in that area but the Rangers coaching staff are hopeful that the bustling frontman will be fit in time. First team coach KJean-Claude Darcheville scoresenny McDowall said: "There is a tear in Jean-Claude's hamstring but we are hopeful that the injury will clear up. We have a bit of time to work on him but you can never be certain with this type of injury." Darcheville was desperately disappointed to miss the first match with Lyon at the Stade Gerland on October 2 when he was also suffering from hamstring damage picked up in the Motherwell match four days earlier. He recovered from that and made a big impact in the SPL wins over Inverness, Falkirk and Killie and also played against Suttgart last week. However, he is now fighting to make the match which could send Rangers into the last 16 of the Champions League.
