BRAHIM HEMDANI reckons team spirit and the will to win can be the difference for Rangers when they meet Sporting tonight in the first leg of the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. The French-Algerian midfielder is liable to be a key man in his familiar anchor role against the Portuguese - as he has been for most of this campaign. Brahim HemdaniHe relishes these occasions and he feels that the togetherness of this Rangers squad can be vital. He said: "One of the key elements is that we are all working for each other. The spirit has changed and it is not like the last two seasons. "The atmosphere is very good. Everyone is smiling and that has helped us go forward. "I'm not surprised that we are in the quarter-finals because when you come to such a club as Rangers you know you will face all challenges. "This year is obviously a good year for us. We have already won one trophy and we still have three to play for. "It is an enjoyable situation to be in." Hemdani, of course, went all the way to the final in 2004 when he was skipper of Marseille, and while he would love to get back to that stage he is not getting ahead of himself. He said: "It's too early to say that we can win it. We can only focus on this game. When you reach this stage every team has quality. "We were not the favourites when the Champions League draw put us in a group with Barcelona, Stuttgart and Lyon. "We had a massive task in front of us but we did well and now we are hoping to continue our run in the UEFA Cup."

WALTER SMITH is ready to make sliight alterations to his Euro set up tomorrow night as he chases the win he wants against Sporting in his quest to take Rangers to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. The boss has hinted that he will make some tactical changes to his game plan for the Sporting match as he believes he needs to be more proactive. He said: "I don't think we could have played a more difficult team than Werder Bremen in the last round where we worked extremely hard by nullifying a lot of their strengths. "We would hope we would be able to go and cause Sporting more problems than we did against Bremen. "The knockout matches have gone well for us and it has not just been about defending when we go away from home. "We played very well in the second half against Panathinaikos, for example, when we had most of the game and pushed forward. "We have a way of playing this year which has been successful so far but we know we have to change some tactics to try and cause Sporting a problem or two."

WALTER SMITH has revealed that tomorow's UEFA Cup clash with Sporting comes too soon for Daniel Cousin. However, the former Lens striker has been earmarked to play in the second leg of the quarter-final tie in the Jose Alvalade Stadium next week. Cousin fractured his jaw against BremenCousin suffered a fractured jaw in the first leg of the last round when he was hit by Bremen defender Per Mertesacker havind destroyed the Germans by scoring the first goal and instigating the second. He is back in full training, but only at non-contact level due to the nature of his injury and Rangers have to be careful with him. Boss Walter Smith said: "Daniel is not quite ready to play for us, either tomrorow night or on Sunday at Tannadice but he could be ready for the away leg in Lisbon next week. "He is fit enough but he is only doing non-contact training at the moment and it is too soon for him." The big striker is still angry that Mertesacker's rashness has cost him his place in the side. He told rangers.co.uk: "It was great to see the team hold on in Bremen and I was really happy to have played my part in getting us to the last eight. "At the same time, I was disappointed not to be involved in Germany because their player had broken my jaw without even being booked. "Because of him, I have been out for a few weeks and that has been frustrating." As mentioned earlier this week, Kevin Thomson, Steve Davis and Brahim Hemdani will all be fit to play tomorrow night. Charlie Adam is suspended after receiving his third yellow card in Europe in Bremen.

EURO specialist Brahim Hemdani hinted today that he may stay on at Rangers next season despite constant speculation that he will go in the summer. Brahim HemdaniThe former Marseille captain, who led that side in the 2004 UEFA Cup Final, has a year go after the conclusion of this campaign. Hemdani has been used sparingly on the domestic scene by Walter Smith but he has only missed one of Rangers' 14 matches in Europe and is certain to be a key man against Sporting tomorrow night. His lack of action in the SPL has led to speculation that he will go when this season is over, but he insisted that the European adventure has been invigorating for him. He said: "Every player is ready to play. It's up to the manager to decide who plays.Brahim Hemdani "I have always had a good relationship with him and I have the same relationship with all of the other players. "It's true there was a lot of speculation around me in the last window but I said I would stay until the end of the season and I am happy to be here. "I don't know if I will leave. I still have a year of my contract left. Everybody will have to think about the situation but this is not the time. "We hope that we have four more games in Europe after this one because that will mean we are in the final. "That is big motivation for everyone - not just me."

EURO specialist Brahim Hemdani is set to return to the starting line-up as Rangers take on Sporting Club in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final on Thursday night. The French-Algerian has been a key man on he European stage and having recovered from a groin strain, he is set to be given a major role against the Lisbon side. Hemdani, who has only missed one of Rangers' 14 games in the Champions League and UEFA Cup this season, was injured in the CIS Cup Final against Dundee United but he is fit again now. Similarly, Kevin Thomson has been passed fit for the vital first leg against the Portuguese men after hurting his shin in Saturday's Old Firm triumph in whicb he was the goal-scoring hero. Boss Walter Smith said: "Brahim Hemdani will be fit again. He has had a groin injury for the past couple of weeks which has ruled him out of the games. "Kevin should make it. It was a knock on the shin which was a rather painful one but he will be fit for Thursday."

CHIEF SCOUT Ewan Chester reckons Rangers will need to be at their best to build the lead they want against Sporting on Thursday night. Sporting are fresh from a 4-1 win over lowly Naval at the weekend in which main striker Liedson scored twice and key midfielder Simon Vukcevic returned from a shoulder injury. Chester was there and, having watched Sporting already this season, confirmed what he already knew.Sporting captain Joao Moutinho He said: "They were very comfortable in the game, although they did go behind. "They got the equaliser quickly and then moved ahead and when they went 3-1 up the game was effectively over. "They have good players all over their team and they like to get the ball down and pass and link. "Joao Moutinho, the captain, is very good player and perhaps the most important in their team although Liedson is obviously very dangerous up front. He is a proven goal-scorer and a lethal finisher. "There is no doubt we will need to play well to win the match on Thursday and, again, we will have to be very solid. "Not conceding will be a priority for us."

KEVIN THOMSON knew he was going to score against Celtic on Saturday - after missing a sitter in training 24 hours earlier. The former Hibs midfielder made the difference against the Parkhead outfit when he broke the deadlock seconds before half-time to give his side a 1-0 win. Thomson fires Gers into the leadIt was Thomson's first goal for the Light Blues and he could see it coming after his efforts at Murray Park the day before. The 23-year-old, who was later carried off but is fit for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie with Sporting Lisbon, said: "I actually had a wee feeling I was going to score. "I always get slated by the boys for not scoring and Allan McGregor in particular has been pounding me for not shooting more. "On Friday, all the lads were slaughtering me when I missed a sitter in training. The ball broke to me a couple of yards out but I scuffed it wide with my right foot. "I looked over and saw the gaffer shaking his head. I thought then: 'I'm due a goal - one on Saturday would be nice.'Kevin Thomson battles with Celtic's Scott McDonald "I had a wee sneaky feeling I was going to get one against Celtic but I never imagined it would be like that. "I thought I might get lucky with a shot from distance but I couldn't see myself getting into a one-on-one situation with Artur Boruc and scoring with my right foot. "Luckily I didn't have too much time to think about my finish. I just looked up and told myself to hit it low. It was the greatest feeling in the world to see it hit the net." The only thing that spoiled Thomson's day was the first-half booking which now rules him out of the next Old Firm game at Parkhead on April 16. It was his first domestic caution for almost four months but having had six others, that has sparked a two-match suspension. Kevin Thomson is looked at by Phillip YeatesAs far as Thomson is concerned, it is a small price to pay for the biggest moment of his career so far. He added: "After I scored, I just lost it. I spoke to my mum after the game and told her that I didn't know what I was doing for 30 seconds or so. "When the game was about to restart, I suddenly realised I couldn't catch my breath and I started to gag. "I don't think there was any oxygen left in my lungs and the adrenalin had completely taken over. "I've never known a feeling like that before. It was incredible and scoring a goal like that is just the best feeling in the world."
