  2. JERRY DAWSON DUBBED the Prince of Goalkeepers, Dawson was a hugely effective last line of defence in the great team of the 1930s when Rangers dominated Scottish football in some style. He was not tall, but like Andy Goram of the modern age he had terrific reflexes and tremendous bravery. He played 211 times for the club and won the league on five occasions. he was successful in the Scottish Cup twice and earned 14 Scotland caps.
  3. Manchester United have refused to be drawn on growing speculation they are about to sign striker Michael Owen. The 29-year-old, who is out of contract, did not return for pre-season training with Newcastle after his deal with the Magpies ran out in June. One bookmaker slashed their odds on Owen, who has also been linked with Everton, Aston Villa, Stoke and Hull, joining United from 20-1 to 5-2. "We don't comment on transfer rumours," a United spokesman told BBC Sport. Any deal for Owen would be subject to the striker passing a stringent medical, which could take place as early as Friday, given his frequent injury problems over the last few years. I just question the injury scenario Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce The former Liverpool forward scored 10 goals in all competitions last season, although an ankle injury and groin operation severely disrupted his season. His last league goal was on 10 January against West Ham. Since losing the Champions League final to Barcelona at the end of May, the Premier League holders have sold forward Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80m and failed to persuade striker Carlos Tevez to stay at Old Trafford. The departure of those two players has left United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with a shortage of strikers, with Frazier Campbell also likely to be sold. However, Ferguson did bring in winger Antonio Valencia from Wigan on Tuesday. United were also reportedly keen on Lyon striker Karim Benzema, who is set to join Real, while Bayern Munich forward Franck Ribery has been linked with a move to the Madrid club rather than the English champions. If Ferguson does capture Owen it would be reminiscent of his willingness to take a chance on players with either difficult reputations, such as Eric Cantona, or players that have suffered serious injury problems like Henrik Larsson. Even so, the move for Owen represents something of a gamble for Ferguson, given Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce ruled out a move for the striker given his injury history. "I just question the injury scenario," said Allardyce earlier this week. "I need a striker that's going to be available for 30 games next season. That's not happened for Michael over the last four years." After Newcastle were relegated to the Championship, Owen expressed his desire to remain in the Premier League. The Wasserman Media Group (WMG), the management company that represents him, sent out a brochure to a number of clubs reminding them of the talent that resulted in the striker scoring 158 goals in about 300 games for Liverpool and 40 goals in 89 appearances for England. 606: DEBATE If Fergie can get him firing again, (and if anybody can, the best man manager in the Premier League can) then we have got a real gem ogni strada No-one was available for comment at the WMG. Owen was widely reported to be earning more than £100,000-a-week at Newcastle after signing a four-year deal when he moved from Real Madrid in August 2005 for a club record fee of £16m, though his wages are unlikely to be a problem for the Old Trafford club. However, his time on Tyneside was plagued by injury problems, as he suffered a broken metatarsal bone, knee ligament damage sustained at the 2006 World Cup, as well as a double hernia operation and a thigh problem. The forward has made 79 appearances for the Magpies and scored 30 goals in four seasons. If Owen does move to Old Trafford it would revive the former Liverpool striker's hopes of resurrecting his international hopes and taking part in the 2010 World Cup. Owen has been marginalised by England manager Fabio Capello and has won just one cap under the Italian, as a substitute in the 1-0 friendly defeat by France in Paris on 26 March, 2008. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/8131801.stm
  4. Motherwell boss Jim Gannon suffered an embarrassing defeat by Llanelli in Europa League qualifying in his first match in charge of the Scottish club. The Steelmen enjoyed plenty of the ball early on, but were stifled by some stiff Welsh resistance. Llanelli took a shock lead on 28 minutes on a rare foray forward, when Stuart Jones headed in from a corner. Motherwell tried to get back in the match but looked disjointed and could not convert any of their chances. The defeat means Motherwell go to Parc y Scarlets in a week's time looking to salvage their Europa League futures. Gannon had to deal with the loss of nine regulars from last season's first-team squad, but his side still looked good in the opening exchanges, and with just five minutes on the clock should have taken the lead through Jamie Murphy. MY SPORT: DEBATE Yet another shameful Scottish performance, the usual feeble excuses will be rolled out g9mccle The midfielder beat Llanelli's offside trap to collect a ball over the top from Ross Forbes, but instead of shooting himself he tried to square to John Sutton, allowing the visitors to regroup and clear. The Welsh Premier League runners-up were unsettled in the centre of defence when in quick succession, Stuart Jones was booked for a rash challenge, then Lee Jarman was forced to leave the field injured. For all their possession, Motherwell found it difficult to break down a resolute 11-man defensive unit, which served to frustrate the hosts and mute their fans. On the rare occasions that the ball reached Reds striker Rhys Griffiths he found himself isolated with no supporting outlet. But the Welsh side took the lead against the run of play through Jones on 28 minutes. Motherwell manager Jim Gannon Gannon has to pick his side up for the return leg on 9 July The home side conceded a corner defending player-manager Andy Legg's long throw, and from the set piece Jones stole in at the back post to bundle a header past goalkeeper Michael Fraser. Motherwell attempted to press from the wide areas, but their delivery into the box left a lot to be desired, and they were booed off the Airdrie pitch at 1-0 down at the break. After the restart, the Steelmen's play exhibited more pace and purpose, with O'Brien looking sharp on the right. His play set up Steven McGarry then Sutton with headers, although neither could convert, and before long the urgency had fizzled out of the hosts' game. Murphy shot wide from a volley, and substitute Paul Slane also went close with a drive before, with seconds remaining, forcing Llanelli goalkeeper Ashley Morris to make his first serious save of the match with a fine strike. Forbes also had one last effort which Morris held easily, but it was too little too late from Motherwell, and the Welsh club held on for a memorable victory, much to the disgust of the home support. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8129623.stm
  5. Are they worse than Kaunus ?
  6. Exclusive by Andrew Dickson AARON admits he can't wait to return to Rangers after starring for Spain's under-20 side at the Mediterranean Games in Italy. The on-loan Valencia winger has been a standout for his country at the tournament in Pescara, scoring twice as his team has reached the final. Aaron NiguezAaron netted as he played the full 90 minutes in their opening 2-2 draw with Tunisia on June 25 and struck again as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Albania four days later. The 20-year-old then turned in his best performance of the tournament last night as France were beaten 2-1 in the semi-finals. Aaron played 75 minutes of that triumph and now he's looking forward to going for the gold medal against the host nation on Sunday. The youngster also has one eye on next season and he's hoping it can be a landmark campaign for him as he tries to establish himself at Ibrox. Contrary to some reports, Aaron will be returning to Glasgow to complete his two-year loan move from Valencia rather than going back to his homeland. And with manager Walter Smith set to make more use of the club's up-and-coming talents next term, the Spaniard feels confident he can make an impact. Aaron made five appearances for Rangers in 2008/09 - four as a substitute - and scored twice in the Scottish Cup against Forfar Athletic and Hamilton. Aaron NiguezHe said: "Valencia wanted me to go back to them for this season but I was keen to come back to Rangers. "I am due to spend one more year at the club and I want to stay there. I think it is a good place for me to be and I want to help the team to do well. "I am hopeful I can play more football than I did in my first season in Scotland because I have got used to the game there now and I feel I have improved. "I was very happy in Glasgow and I'm looking forward to going back there and trying to win more trophies for the club." Aaron has been pleased with his performances in Italy over the last week as he has continued to make an impression at international level. The likelihood is - as is the case with Madjid Bougherra and DaMarcus Beasley - that he will be given extra time off after playing football through the summer. Most of Smith's squad will report back to Murray Park for pre-season training next Thursday as they start preparing for their SPL title defence. But while Aaron should get a few extra days off, he's eager to return to Auchenhowie too and show he's ready for regular first-team football with the Light Blues. Aaron celebrates winning the SPL with Nacho NovoHe added: "Things have gone very well for me in Italy. We drew our first game 2-2 and I scored then I got another goal against Albania. "I feel I have been playing some good football, especially against France in the semi-final. I didn't score in that game but for me, it was my best match. "Now we have the final against Italy at the weekend and that should be an exciting game because they are the host country. "When we finish here, I will be looking forward to coming back to Rangers and it will be good to get back to training there. "I am not sure if I will get extra time off or not because I have been playing in Italy. I will have to speak to the manager about that. "But even if I get a few more days off to go home and relax, I will be keen to come back to Rangers after that and get started again."
  7. Tonel Sporting Lisbon defender Tonel has been strongly linked with a move to Rangers. The experienced Portuguese player's agent has confirmed that Rangers have made enquiries and that Walter Smith tried to secure his services in January. Tonel reportedly likes the idea of a link up with fellow countryman Pedro Mendes. Rangers face competition from a couple of Italian sides for the 29-year-old's signature. Alan Hutton Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is reportedly willing to offer Alan Hutton back to Rangers. Spurs have an abundance of right-backs at the club and Redknapp is eager to trim the squad. The 24-year-old left Ibrox in 2008 but has made just 19 appearances for Tottenham. Andre Bikey Reading defender Andre Bikey is reportedly interesting Walter Smith. The 24-year-old is valued at around £2.5m but Rangers will face competition from Stoke for his signature. The Cameroon international was impressive during his time in the Premier League with Reading and the Royal's failure to regain promotion to England's top-flight means he could be ready to move on. Christian Dailly It appeared that Dailly had played his last game for Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final in May but the utility man, who is now out of contract could yet return to Ibrox. The 35-year-old former Scotland captain has said: "I'm actually going to speak to the club just to see what's happening - they asked me to give them a call." Marlon Harewood Rangers will reportedly offer Marlon Harewood a route out of Villa Park. The 28-year-old struggled to force his way into the first team at Aston Villa after a £4m move last summer. Harewood is also interesting Fulham and Stoke but Walter Smith is hopeful Champions League football will entice the English midfielder north of the border. Chris Brunt Rangers are reportedly lining up a £3m bid for West Brom winger Chris Brunt. Brunt scored a flurry of goals at the end of last season's Premier League, creating quite a bit of interest. Rangers are likely to face competition from Celtic, with Tony Mowbray thought to be interested in linking up with his former player. Brian Stock Walter Smith is apparently lining up a bid for Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock. Valued at around £1.5m, Stock is also being monitored by Birmingham and Wolves. The 27-year-old has scored 14 goals in 97 appearances for Doncaster. Eduardo Vargas Chilean whizzkid Eduardo Vargas has issued a come-and-get-me plea to the Old Firm, saying a switch to Glasgow would make him a "complete striker". The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has been linked to various clubs but Rangers are thought to be willing to see their interest through. Vargas' club, Cobreloa, value him at around £1.5m. Nabil Baha Rangers have reportedly joined the chase for Malaga striker Nabil Baha. The Moroccan international had a successful season in La Liga last term, alerting a number of clubs to his ability. Baha has two years left on his contract but a release clause of £4.5m in his contract could see him move on. Andy Dorman St. Mirren are poised to fend off interest from the Old Firm in striker Andy Dorman. Buddies manager Gus MacPherson is aware of the interest and it is claimed he is resigned to losing his hit-man. The 27-year-old Englishman had a glittering season for St. Mirren and is widely expected to move on. Kevin Kyle Kilmarnock striker Kevin Kyle is reportedly interesting Walter Smith (pictured). The 28-year-old had a good scoring record last season and has even been credited with keeping Killie in the top tier of Scottish football single-handedly after his move to the club in January.
  8. Bobo Balde, the former Celtic defender, insists the club owe him more than £200,000 and he has taken his case to PFA Scotland, the players' union. The Guinean, who already has a case pending with FIFA over disciplinary sanctions imposed by Celtic, did not receive the final two months of his salary. Celtic insist this is because he was given an advance' of £100,000 and owed fines of £100,000. Balde argues that the first sum was actually a bonus he was due and that the fines were unlawful. Balde is ready to take the club to court if necessary, but Celtic are confident they have done nothing wrong.
  9. Charlie Adam has pleaded with Rangers manager Walter Smith to give him a second chance at Ibrox after making only nine appearances last season. (Daily Record) It probably make a good poll to see how many of us would like to see him get another chance, I for one think he is worth at least one more chance, he has three years remaining on his five year contract.............I think ?, plus he is still a young player who could improve
  10. KEVIN THOMSON will fly south this morning hoping to be given the news that he's ready to start next season with a bang. Well, it'll make a nice change of pace from opening up with a crash. Last summer Thomson returned to Ibrox on the back of that extraordinary journey to the UEFA Cup Final only to be floored by what now he rates as the most painful defeat of his Rangers career. Turfed out of the Champions League qualifiers in utter humiliation by the rank outsiders of Kaunas - and all before the Continent's genuine big boys had even made it back off the beaches - Walter Smith and his players were plunged into full-blown crisis before the rest of Europe was even in proper pre-season. The mental scars which accompanied that abject failure have taken longer to heal than the surgical wounds on his rebuilt left knee - the legacy of a horrific accident at Rugby Park which came some four months after Thomson and his team-mates had been reduced to a laughing stock in Lithuania. But now that he is rehabilitated and relishing the prospect of an imminent return to the front line, Thomson looks back on last summer as one of the most important lessons yet in his relatively fledgling career. "It was a hammer blow for us all at the time," Thomson nods as he thinks back to that calamity in Kaunas and to the personal savaging he received afterwards from Smith, despite scoring the away goal which looked, at one stage, to be enough to see Rangers into the next round. It was the night he learned never again to rest on his laurels. He grimaces slightly as he continues: "Yes, Kaunas was probably the low point in my time at the club. After reaching the UEFA Cup Final at the end of the previous season it was like coming back down to earth with a real bang. "To suffer a defeat like that when you are at a club like this one it's not easy to take. I'm sure it sticks in the throats of a lot of the boys even now. It was such a poor performance from us and such a massive disappointment. "But, looking back now, at least we managed to move on from that and make it a successful season. "Thankfully we will go straight into the group stages this time round. "That takes a wee bit of pressure off us at the start of the season and allows us to get up to speed. Fingers crossed when the group stages come around and we are in with the big hitters the boys will be at the top of their game." And yet, had it not been for Kaunas then Rangers might never have made it this far along their own road to rehab. In fact, Thomson recalls the blood thirsty clamour which greeted Rangers' European dismissal and pinpoints one day amidst all that madness which he now believes set the tone for what was ultimately a gritty title triumph. He said: "To be honest what really sticks in my mind from that time was our first league game of the season away to Falkirk and how much pressure the boys were under going into that game. "Falkirk is not an easy place to go to at the best of times but the pressure was really mounting on us and there was a lot of flak flying around. "The punters had made it clear that they were unhappy because we were so poor in Kaunas and I just remember thinking we really had to start off with three points. It was a real high-pressure situation. "It was such a cagey game and the pressure was immense. It would have been easy to fall into our shells and get swallowed up. "But we battled our way to victory that day and I think that said something about the character in our squad. Looking back now I think that Falkirk game gave us the base from which to push on." Thomson, of course, would soon be removed from the heat of the battle when, in November, his left leg buckled so awfully under the weight of Kilmarnock striker David Fernandez. It's been a long road back but, at last, the finishing line is in sight. A nod and a wink from his surgeon in Harley Street today and he'll have the green light to pull the boots back on and hurl himself back into the rough and tumble of a full-on pre-season. It is Thomson's aim to be back at the heart of Smith's midfield, if not in time to play in each of Rangers' warm-up matches this summer, then certainly before the curtain goes up on the start of the champions' title defence. And he is sharply aware also, perhaps given the lessons learned over the last 12 months, that he will not keep his place on the strength of sentiment alone. Thomson said: "That's the situation you are in at a big club. You have to expect it. I'm not under any illusions. "I have had some nice press since I've been out injured and that's been gratefully received but I know, if I don't hit the ground running at the start of the season, there will be some stick from certain areas. "I've said all along, I am very confident in my own ability and there is no reason why I can't get back to the level I was at before the injury. "It's been a long, hard challenge and now I'm just looking forward to getting back playing. "If I said I was absolutely buzzing for that first challenge it would be something of an understatement." http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/football/spl/rangers/2009/07/01/kevin-thomson-kaunas-was-the-worst-night-of-my-rangers-career-we-ll-be-better-prepared-this-time-86908-21485598/
  11. RANGERS are set to lose Madjid Bougherra for a MONTH of their SPL title defence. The Algerian ace looks certain to play in the African Cup of Nations in January. Algeria are just one win from qualification. If they reach the finals in Angola, the big stopper could miss five or six games. The tournament starts on January 10 with the final held on January 31. Gers have a hectic schedule in January which includes a New Year Old Firm derby. Bougy, who missed two Old Firm clashes last season through injury, will be OK for Parkhead. But he would head for Africa after the derby and then be forced to miss around five big games. Bougherra said: "This season I have all of the Scottish competitions, the Champions League and hopefully the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations. I can't wait to go and play in the Champions League against the best in Europe, it's a big test." Meanwhile, Gers could use Charlie Adam as bait to land Northern Ireland midfield ace Chris Brunt. Walter Smith is keen on West Brom ace Brunt and Adam may be part of the deal. http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/spl/2507311/Bougy-woe-rocks-Gers.html
  12. There was me thinking I was on my own thinking that Adam is a decent player who can improve given a chance in his best position
  13. To be honest I actually think Adam is better player, although to be fair I haven't seen enough of Furman, and is roughly the same age,I would like to see Adam get a run in the middle, hard hat on..........in coming!!!!
  14. How can you be disappointed ?,he's a young player who we have seen little of,he may well turn out to be a top player, however I won't hold my breathe
  15. RANGERS have stormed to victory at the prestigious Eurofan tournament in Ukraine, going through the event unbeaten in six games to lift the trophy. The Light Blues, represented by a squad of club staff members and supporters, beat local side Karpaty 4-1 in the final in Lviv. Some of the players who will represent Rangers at the Eurofan tournament in UkraineTheir win capped a fine three days at the 16-team competition, in which they scored 27 times and conceded just four goals. After a 4-1 success against fans of Dutch outfit Heerenveen and a 10-0 thrashing of an equivalent team from Wales on Friday, Gers made sure of their place in the last eight. Needing just a point from their meeting with Polish side Ostrovio yesterday morning to confirm a pool win, they got it when David Matthews levelled to secure a 1-1 draw. Having topped Group C, the Scots then went on to play Croatia in the quarter-finals and did what was necessary to progress again. Robert Godfrey grabbed his second goal of the tournament to give Rangers a lead and although the Croats equalised, Godfrey restored the lead with an 18-yard curler. Erald Krasniqi then made it 3-1 after the break as the Ibrox men ran out comfortable winners. Awaiting them in the semis were Inter Milan and once more Gers were dominant from start to finish. EurofanGary McGonnell grabbed a brilliant opener after he made a mazy run from his own half to score and Krasniqi doubled the advantage early in the second period. McGonnell soon made it three before Neil Smith got his name on the scoresheet as the Light Blues moved into cruise control. Inter pulled a late consolation back but they still couldn't have the last word, with Ian Danby finding the net to make it 5-1 at the death. Home side Karpaty were well backed in the final and with plenty of locals cheering them on, it seemed to be in the script that they would win. But Rangers had other ideas and were three up at the midway point through a Krasniqi penalty and McGonnell's brace. The hosts tried to make a game of it again as they reduced their deficit early in the second half but Danby struck to seal glory for the away side. Colin Atkinson from the club's Football in the Community department has run the team over the weekend with coach Ian Clark and he was thrilled to come out on top. He said: "We are delighted to win the tournament, especially as it is the first time we have participated in the event. Some of the players who took part in Eurofan 2008"It was great to see Rangers fans representing themselves and the club so well both on and off the pitch in front of supporters of teams from across Europe. "There were some great individual performances in the squad and Erald did particularly well as the top scorer in the squad with seven goals. "Gary and David were right behind him with six and five respectively and now we look forward to setting about retaining the trophy at Eurofan 2010." The win was particularly satisfying for five members of the squad, who are attached to the 45 Commando Royal Marines and all support the club. Danby, McGonnall, Clark, Karl Neave and Scott Nicholson left their forces colleagues after returning to Britain recently to join the group in Ukraine. And having served on the front line in Afghanistan earlier this year, winning was a real high for them after some testing times over the past few months.
