Agreed, did he not play @ right back against Portsmouth ?,it is Walter we are talking about
-
Totally agree Johnny, however we have all been told that this is going to happen due to our lack of transfer activity and how many times do we hear fans moaning about the youths not getting a chance, I see tomorrow is as good a time as any to play 1-2 of them, especially as we may need to,Little plays CB for the reserves I believe,he's a big strong lad with pace and as I have already said he does have international experience, not saying he will/should play just reiterating the fact that we HAVE to give them game time sooner or later
-

EX-CELTIC player Brian McLaughlin has been found dead in a canal. The 54-year-old former midfielder, who also played for Ayr United, Motherwell, Hamilton and Falkirk was discovered around 11.30am yesterday. Police divers recovered his body from the Union Canal in Falkirk. Although a post mortem was due to be held, there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. McLaughlin's body was found close to a canal tunnel near Falkirk High rail station. His sudden death comes just weeks after former Motherwell player Paul McGrillen, 37, was found dead at his home in Hamilton. As a Celtic youth signing, McLaughlin was one of the most promising and gifted youngsters in Scotland and the Falkirk-born 16-year-old became professional for Celtic in 1971. Highly regarded by Jock Stein, he was given his debut in September of that year in the 6-2 League Cup win against Clydebank and within two years took his place in the first team. In July 1973 against Dundee in the Drybrough Cup in a 4-0 win and went on to play in the final of that tournament. Later that season he starred in an Old Firm victory for Celtic at Ibrox. Weeks later McLaughlin was badly injured in clash with Clyde's Willie McVie and although he returned from injury he failed to return to form. He was loaned to Finn Harps in Ireland for the start of the 1976-77 season but his days with Celtic were numbered. After 20 appearances and one goal McLaughlin went to Ayr United in November 1977. That season he inspired Ayr to a memorable 2-1 win over Celtic with a brilliant individual goal. He quit playing at senior level in 1987 but went on to coach St Mirren. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/display.var.2525536.0.0.php

SOLDIERS from the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland took part in a landmark friendly yesterday wearing strips kindly donated by Rangers and West Ham. The soldiers are in Afghanistan to train the Afghan National Army and they teamed up with their counterparts from 7 Scots to take on the new recruits. Scots soldiers take on Afghan troops in a friendly in KabulThe donation of the Rangers strips follows a visit on 26 July by Douglas Alexander, the Secretary of State for International Development. Whilst there, he learned over lunch with the soldiers at Camp Souter that one side had no football strips and he arranged for them to be kitted out. Back in Britain, the Scots minister linked up with the Light Blues and immediately arranged to send a team strip to Afghanistan. The Afghan National Army players wore the Rangers kit, with the international side sporting West Ham's strip colours. The match took place at the Kabul Military Training Centre, where international mentors including British soldiers and Royal Marines train Afghan Officer and Non-Commissioned Officers. The final score was 2-2 and the international team's captain, Rangers supporter Major David Jones, heralded the game as a huge success. He said: "The Afghans that I'm training are very fit young men - they do a lot of sport and weight training. All of us, particularly the Afghans, have been looking forward to the game for a while. It's the first full match we've played against one another and it was very competitive. "The quality of the cadets on and off the pitch is very good. They're very keen to serve their country and they're very keen to help in the fight against the insurgents. Scots soldiers take on Afghan troops in a friendly in Kabul"We're extremely grateful to both Rangers and West Ham United for the donation of the kit. Being a Rangers fan myself, having their strips here made the game even better!" Colour Sergeant Gary Buchanan, 36, from Arbroath, plays in midfield. He has previously served in Iraq, but this is his first mentoring role. Speaking before the match, he said: "When we first came, I wasn't sure what to expect of the Afghans as my previous experience was working with the Iraqis. "I've been here for five months now and it's been rewarding work. They're keen, enthusiastic and fit - fitness is obviously a key part of soldiering. "They're also a very good standard considering their Army was only established six years ago. I hope the same skill won't be applied on the field! "Obviously this work is very different to the work the boys are doing down south in Helmand, but it's just as important. "This is what is going to allow the Afghans to have control for themselves and what will get us as a coalition out of Afghanistan." http://www.rangers.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Headlines/0,,5~1754386,00.html

Birmingham have announced the signing of former Liverpool and Rangers defender Gregory Vignal on a one-year contract, subject to a medical. The 28-year-old left-back played under Blues boss Alex McLeish at Rangers and has impressed during his time on trial. "He's a good athlete, mobile, strong and aggressive," McLeish told Birmingham's official website. "At Rangers when we won the league it was a very successful campaign for him, so I know what he can bring us." Vignal, who joins from Lens, will fill the gap left by David Murphy, who is recovering from a broken knee cap. 606: DEBATE Your reaction to the signing of Vignal He first came to England when he joined Liverpool as a 19-year-old and spent five years at Anfield, going out on loan to clubs in France and Spain as well as Rangers, where he first crossed paths with McLeish. Since then he has had a spell at Portsmouth and was also a loan at Southampton. "I've kept in touch with him and his family and I know he's been bursting over the last couple of years to get back to the top league," said McLeish. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/8200408.stm

THE Old Firm were today handed a massive Euro boost on the eve of the new SPL season. SportTimes can today reveal the door has been left ajar for direct entry into next season's Cham-pions League for whoever wins the title. It had been thought this season - when Rangers qualified automatically for the £10million group phase - would be the last time the SPL winners would benefit from this money- spinning safe passage. However, Uefa have confirmed there is still a chance the 2009/10 winners will get an automatic group slot. If the winners of this season's Champions League gain entry into the 2010/11 competition by virtue of their own league position, Scot-land's champions will go straight in. This was last the case back in 2005/06. Barcelona won the Champions League by beating Arsenal in Paris - but they already had a group stage berth assured from finishing top of La Liga - so Celtic went straight in and avoided a qualifier. A Uefa statement said: "The position at which a club enters the Champions League is dependent on its country's ranking, which is determined by the sum of Uefa country co-efficients over the previous five years. "Champions from coun- tries ranked first to 12th automatically qualify for the group stages - for season 2009/10 Scotland was ranked 10th. "For season 2010/11 it has now been confirmed Scotland are ranked 13th. However, there is still a chance there could be direct qualification. "If the winners of the Champions League this season also qualify for the following season's group stages through their league position, an extra space would be created in the group stages. "The champions of the country ranked 13th - Scotland - would take this place." The news will add an extra edge to the Old Firm's battle for the flag, and history is for them in terms of the Champions League winners already having slots through domestic performances. In the past FOUR seasons the winners of Europe's ultimate prize have already had group spots secured from their league placings - and with the major operators now dominating the Champions League there is a fair chance it will happen again this season which would allow the SPL champions to sneak in. Meantime, new chief executive Neil Doncaster has pledged to bring summer football to the SPL - but only if the clubs want it. Doncaster has revealed he is ready to talk to those clubs who are in favour of a radical shake-up. There have been calls for an introduction to summer football after a string of poor European results in the past few weeks as they go into action early. "There will be no attempt to ignore the issue," said Doncaster. "But it's for clubs to decide what they want. We will consult and put options to them. But we are restricted by the international calendar. "We will be looking at options for next season. We will consult the clubs and we can't afford any knee-jerk reactions." http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/display.var.2525525.0.0.php
