  2. THE consortium planning to buy crisis club Rangers for £40million were last night warned: You won't get them on the cheap. Motoring tycoon Douglas Park and Ibrox directors Dave King and Paul Murray are poised to buy majority shareholder Sir David Murray's stake in the SPL champions. But last night a source close to the proposed deal said steel magnate Sir David, 58, would not be pressured into selling if he thought it was not in the best interests of the club. Douglas Park Backing ... Douglas Park The insider said: "There's no way David Murray will let the club go at a knockdown price. "His main concern will always be, as he has stated before, that the club ends up in the right hands." Park, 59, has built a personal fortune of around £50million from his successful Park's of Hamilton motors and coaches chain. Park is a lifelong Gers fan and has been linked to moves for power at Ibrox before. With South African-based financial guru King, 53, and chartered accountant Paul Murray, 45, already on the board as non-executive directors, this could be his chance to seize control. King, who grew up in Glasgow's tough Castlemilk scheme, invested £20million in the club back in March 2000. Ex-Deutsche Bank executive Paul Murray - no relation to Sir David - won his place on the Gers board two years ago Rangers have estimated debts of £30million. But the club has assets such as the Murray Park training ground, Ibrox Stadium and star players like Allan McGregor, Madjid Bougherra, Steven Davis and Pedro Mendes. Our source added: "There are assets there. "And there are players who have attracted English Premiership interest in the past and who would do so again in the January transfer window." Amid informed speculation of a possible rival bid from Dubai-based British investors the King consortium's next moves will now be carefully scrutinised. Gers fans have raised fears for the future of their club since manager Walter Smith claimed it was being run by bankers last weekend. However HBOS chiefs denied those allegations in a statement on Monday night. Sir David put the club up for sale after stepping down as chairman in August. http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/2702817/You-wont-get-Rangers-on-cheap.html

  7. Coach Manuel Pellegrini was "very embarrassed" after Real Madrid were crushed 4-0 by third tier village side Alcorcon in the Spanish King's Cup. Real fielded a strong team but were 3-0 down to the Segunda Division B club by half-time in the round of 32 first leg. "There's no reason or explanation for how the team performed. We hope our fans can forgive us," said Pellegrini. Real director general Jorge Valdano also apologised to fans but backed under-fire Pellegrini. "It's difficult and I know how the Madrid supporters must be feeling," Valdano stated on the club's website. We must stick together, and when I say 'together' I am also thinking about the coach Real director general Jorge Valdano Despite embarking on a £226.5m spending spree over the summer and signing Chilean Pellegrini from Villarreal, Real have won only one game in their last five, with three defeats. Reports suggest Pellegrini could lose his job if Real, who were without their two most expensive signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, lose to Getafe at the weekend or are beaten by AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. But Valdano stated: "We have to take it as a lesson in humility that must serve as a starting point for a fresh beginning. "We must stick together, and when I say 'together' I am also thinking about the coach." And Pellegrini added: "I am not thinking about my job or about resigning, only the next match." Madrid, who have not won the Spanish King's Cup (Copa del Rey) since 1993, suffered an upset last season as they were knocked out at the fourth-round stage by another third-tier side, Real Union, on the away goals rule. 606: DEBATE What do you make of Real's latest woes? Pellegrini conceded: "We've seen it 3,200 times before: a team who were tremendously motivated and were able to play at their best. "I saw them in recent games, we had reports, but they played very well. "We need to react. We are going to find difficult opponents all over the place. We need to play well everywhere."
  8. Portsmouth have been banned from making new signings until they settle transfer debts owed to other English clubs. The Premier League blocked Pompey manager Paul Hart's attempt to sign midfielder Eugen Bopp on Monday. And they will not lift the ban until the club, who are bottom of the Premier League, have settled their debts. A club insider told BBC Sport the problem "should be resolved quickly" but the transfer ban will raise fresh questions about the club's finances. Saudi businessman Ali Al Faraj took over at Portsmouth three weeks ago, buying a 90% stake from previous owner Sulaiman Al Fahim. Last week, Al Faraj was quoted in the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat as saying he was "no billionaire", knew nothing about sport and wanted to sell the club quickly. Israeli mogul Levi Kushnir and Hong Kong-based Balram Chainrai have subsequently emerged as potential investors in the club and have attended Pompey's last two matches, Tuesday's 4-0 Carling Cup win over Stoke and Saturday's 0-0 league draw at Hull. Another short transfer ban was imposed on the club at the end of August because of debts they owed, BBC Sport understands. With seven players unavailable for the Stoke game, Hart was eager to sign Bopp, who he had managed at Nottingham Forest. The 26-year-old, who was a free agent after being released by Crewe in the summer, had been training with Portsmouth for the last few weeks. However, the Premier League refused to register the player because of Portsmouth's debts. The transfer ban is the latest in a long line of off-the-field problems for manager Hart. There was a delay in the players' wages being paid in September, while the club was on the brink of administration in August. "A club needs to know where it is going and have a long-term plan," stated Hart ahead of the game with Stoke. "I wouldn't like to go any further with that because I haven't had these conversations with the new owners. I would anticipate this would be in the next month." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/p/portsmouth/8329673.stm
  9. The Football Association is to investigate the crowd trouble that marred Tuesday's Carling Cup match between Barnsley and Manchester United. After a number of reported incidents the FA is awaiting the reports of an FA crowd control adviser, present at the game, and from referee Chris Foy. Eight fans were arrested at the match after trouble flared at half-time and two more later at the railway station. Fans also broke into a kiosk and stole money and food from the shelves. Police were hit with bottles and eight staff were forced to hide in a storeroom for 25 minutes when fans forced themselves into the club's catering area. Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them during the disorder, with one police officer suffering a minor facial injury. United beat the Championship side 2-0 to progress into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup. An FA spokesman said: "There is no place for anti-social or violent behaviour in our game. "Any culprit found to be involved in these disturbances and identified as such by either the police or clubs should be subject to a lengthy ban from attending football matches." Barnsley are also launching their own investigation into the violence, accusing Manchester United fans of causing "substantial damage" in the stadium's north stand. A Barnsley spokesman said: "It's a hell of a mess down there. Doors have been kicked in, tills have been damaged and there's food and drink everywhere. "It looks like a swamp in one of the bars. A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further." Five of the eight people arrested at the ground were Manchester United supporters and three were Barnsley fans. Two further arrests were made at about 2300 GMT after fans jumped on to railway tracks in a bid to stop the Barnsley to Sheffield train. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_cup/8329580.stm
