  1. Reference big Rog' the Dodge, here's the story.

Rangers third team played in the Combination League, included works teams like the Corporation transport. After the Berwick debacle, Rangers chased Jim Forrest, George McLean, and Alex Willougby. Despite such foolhardiness, we reached the 1967 ECWC final in Nuremberg against Bayern. The manager saw Roger Hynd play centre forward for the third team against Glasgow Corporation Transport at Helenvale Park. We won 8-3, Roger scored five. Thus, securing his place in the starting line up against Munich.

Roger was part of the Shankly dynasty from the Ayrshire mining hamlet of Glenbuck. Brothers Bill and Bob managed the likes of Liverpool, Carlisle, and Stirling Albion. Roger was Boss at Motherwell in the seventies. I wonder how many of those that turned out for the almost mythical amatuer side, 'the Glenbuck Cherrypickers' survive? The very name evokes tremendous optimism amid a hard life, Roger was the very epitome of that experience.

He played 48 games for Rangers, scoring 5 goals. The club received a £25,000 fee from Crystal Palace in 1968, Roger moved on to Birmingham City in 1971.

Roger was at Birmingham when a guy we don't hear much of these days and a great bear, Jimmy Calderwood was progressing from youth to first team football.

  2. IIRR DJ was moved to CH in the 3-1 defeat against the mighty Ajax of that time. Johnn Rep Criuff and Arie Haan scored for Ajax with Doddie scoring for Rangers. Unfortunately we lost Johan Cruiff last year and Pete Keizer last week from that fantastic team.

DJ was moved to that position at his own request. His main failing was that evenings spent in the bar at the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew were catching up with him.

He was a great centre half. But imo, rid of the Kris Boyd malaise could have turned out to be one of the greatest centre forwards we ever had.

  3. Boabie thanks for your reply ,if D.J. is Derek Johnstone it was not that as my memory ties in with other replies.

Mac, I saw big Derek pull off exactly the move you described at Ibrox against Ajax . Was it called the super-cup or similar ?

I very much doubt that Roger, steady centre half that he was would have chased one of his own punts. He was far too disciplined to do that.

  4. This was in the wake of Berwick of course, following which CF Jim Forrest (who had almost a goal game record), never played for Rangers again.

And somewhere I still have the Daily Express of the next day with the headline "Rangers Wives Weep".

    RIP BIg Roger

My dad moved heaven and earth to ensure that him, me, my granda, my grandas pal and that guys son could all go to the final. I was only 11 at the time. We'd been to the Berwick game too.

In my mind there is no doubt that Rangers would have won the ECWC that year had Berwick not happened.

Jim Forrest was the most clinical finisher I ever saw and given how the ECWC match went Jim would have got at least two.

  5. It's been very effectively covered up in the UK-Scotland for decades and currently implicates us far more than them, still with no highlighting of the crime-to-benefit-the-club that they knew and did not go to the police.

Mega is a sellik fan. It's no surprise he wants to bring us into the enquiries.

As pointed out in the article, go to a school to teach kids about journalism and put on your sellik tap.

  6. I've seen dozens of absolute tubes who should never have found their way to Scotland never mind to Ibrox. Some of them didn't even merit junior level.

Stop fixating on what they've been assessed at and begin questioning whether they are actually what we used to rate as Rangers class.

Think back to the absolute dumplings Ally worked with - granted, most he brought in himself. Then taking things to the airy fairy tale world of somebody like RDB coming in and being honest - would guys like Halliday, Kiernan or several others ever, for the rest of their careers, get a game wearing a Rangers jersey ?

I'll go back to what I said earlier GS, just because that's all we can afford, does that make them good enough ?

I'll go further - take a look at the money spent and the league table.

    Are they good enough ?

Remember, we're not allowed to look at the past so last season or maybe last week doesn't count.

  7. If they call a rangers first team player a juniour level player they really are talking shite.

  8. Your suggestions are quite scurrilous and totally without any foundation.

For you information I had the privilege to watch our teams for the late 50's/early 60's when the they were playing and winning three Cup Finals in a row etc, so have no need to read their history in books or on Wikipedia nor do I need any lessons in Rangers history from you.

I know for a fact that what you said there BH is true. I suspect that there is some mis-communication somewhere.

  9. I think he means that we are living in the past.(hes got a point).

I'd agree LB that is what was being proposed. The point I would make though is, how far back into the "past" are we permitted to go ?

On this thread others have alluded to Halliday playing well in a past game and Miller having helped win the league in the past.

  10. Thanks for showing your working.

Think we can all agree that Halliday is a junior player now.

Instead of coming on every so often to make snide remarks to other posters, why not wake yourself up and read what folk are saying ?

Post 23 - " He is hopeless in defence and shows nothing going forward. He doesn't inspire anyone around him and invariably if they are playing poorly he'll hit their level quickly. "

  11. English is another one with a long term agenda. He is the more respectable face of the coven including Ill Phil and the others. His rumour mongering is no more than an attempt to give gravitas to rubbish made up by the fool James or Muirhead.

He is in place to broadcast lies to cause disquiet among the Rangers support and for no other reason.

Meanwhile the mental health of the fool James continues to deteriorate -

" I realise that most of my diligent readers apprise themselves of the excellent contributions of my commentators and will be aware of the reasons for my absence from our site yesterday. A neighbour had called me to advise that Police Scotland were urgently trying to reach me. They left a letter behind that their intelligence unit had picked up on a credible threat to my life. According to a detective sergeant, the conspirators are based in the Stranraer area. Some were active members of the UVF and UDA. A couple of them had served time for murder. They were believed to have access to weapons. I was advised to stay with a family member or friend during my visit to my home town. I was in exile on my own Main Street. The price of running this site is now measured in my blood. I put my apartment on the market and demurred from cancelling my home insurance as they might raze it to the ground. My furniture is now in storage. It’s a shocking state of affairs. They evidently cannot handle the truth."

    :roflmao:

  12. Regardless of how you or I view him, classing him as Junior player is just ridiculous. There are decent Junior players - but Halliday is not as low as a Junior level player.

He can. He was terrific in a number of games last year, including Celtic and that utter doing we gave Dundee. He's playing badly at the moment and has his limitations. Had our summer transfer window not been such a bollocks, he wouldn't be playing every minute of every game in a position which he says is not his preferred one. He's no Makelele but your criticism is just daft.

Guys , when there is serious debate here about handing a contract extension to Kenny Miller you might start to understand where I'm coming from.

Imo Miller at his best was never Rangers class.

The level our squad are playing at today seems to see Miller, much like Halliday as some sort of example deserving reward.

They aren't. Neither of them ,comparing them to Rangers players I've seen in the past are good enough.

Being the best of a bad bunch does not make you good enough.

If I'm honest there isn't a single player at Ibrox who should be kept. The only reason they will be is because we can't afford to replace them.

  13. It's these ridiculous superlatives that drive me absolutely bonkers.

So Halliday was one of our best performers in a Championship winning season..... to be followed the next season by being written off as a Junior player - only Rangers fans I tell ye'. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I didn't see him as one of our best performers last season Craig. The guy is a bomb-scare with very little talent. He is hopeless in defence and shows nothing going forward. He doesn't inspire anyone around him and invariably if they are playing poorly he'll hit their level quickly.

Maybe I'm just used to seeing guys wearing our jerseys who can actually play football.
