Poor crowd at the Ethihad they wanted European football for years , they get it and the crowd is down 10,000 on a league game .

That's been the case for many of Man City's CL home games. Do a lot of their fans not boycott European games after some row with UEFA?

Tonight will give an indication if that game has changed the way SG approaches this kind of challenge.

There should be more physical and mental energy to take on whatever way we go about things.....but again our midfield options are curtailed, noteably the absence of Jack and Ejaria (on top of the longer term injuries).

    Is Ejaria injured?

Liverpool are looking good great pool of players .

IMO Liverpool have won 5 from 5 in the EPL without even getting into top gear. On top of that Salah has not yet got into his groove yet this season. They are serious contenders

  4. It was a long time ago but I seem to recall there was a great Kevin Beattie tale from Terry Butchers autobiography from years ago. Ipswich were playing in sub zero conditions somewhere in Eastern Europe (old Soviet Union I think) and all the players were wearing gloves, long sleeves, tights etc. Beattie just laughed at them and ran onto the surface in shorts and a short sleeved top and played a blinder.

Difference for me is that we should have more energy in the tank to get up and down the pitch.

The challenge is to do so whilst retaining possession. More especially given our limited midfield options, together with the absence of Morelos, which limits options for how to attack.

Good points buster. It will be interesting to see if Lafferty plays the lone striker role (like he does for NI sometimes). If so we need play more balls into channels and to feet as opposed to pumping the ball high from the back to relieve pressure.

Thursday is effectively a 'free hit'.

I'd go for the element of surprise, attack and go for a goal in the first 15 to 20 minutes.

I can't see 90 minutes of parking the bus working against a team that has quality middle to front.

Had we had Jack and Ejaria fit, I'd be much more confident of getting a result.

I agree with the free hit theory. We have nothing to lose in this game IMO so why not go out and have a go. I get the feeling we can learn more about the new players/team from that than sitting back for 90 minutes (ala Parkhead in the 1st half)

I hear, and keep hearing, that Villareal is out of form, struggling in  La Liga, not ready for the EL, and, thus, we are 'catching them at the right time'.

Does this remind anyone of the Valencia team, with Mendieta, Claudio Lopez, Kily Gonzalez, and others, which gave us a football lesson over two legs,

    in, what, 1999?

I've heard it all before. Back in 99, Valencia were dubbed by great minds of the Scottish press as the "Aberdeen of Spain" as Aberdeen had also been struggling with no wins at the start of that season.  Not only did "the Aberdeen of Spain" teach us a lesson over in Spain, they also topped a group containing Bayern Munich and went all the way to the final in Paris. The 2-1 defeat at Ibrox was a much closer game but Valencia were worthy winners.

The draws certainly weren't being kind to us that season.

    Quarter Finals
Nottingham Forest Eng Grasshoppers Zürich Sui 4-1 1-1
1.FC Köln Ger Glasgow Rangers Sco 1-0 1-1
Wisla Kraków Pol Malmö FF Swe 2-1 1-4
Austria Wien Aut Dynamo Dresden GDR 3-1 0-1

    Semi Finals
Nottingham Forest Eng 1.FC Köln Ger 3-3 1-0
Austria Wien Aut Malmö FF Swe 0-0 0-1

The old European Cup is so far removed from the CL. Let's face it, most teams that won it only had to play 5-7 competitive games to win it. If the draw was kind you could be playing teams from Malta, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, Iceland, Finland etc. in the 1st round.

  9. I was just listen listening to Carlos Carvalhal this morning on Talk Sport and he mentioned that we wanted him back in 2015 but Sheffield Wednesday got in first. Excuse my ignorance but was this widely known? I presume he was in the running with Warburton? Quite a cool guy based on what I heard this morning.

  10. The best way to win this "stand off" with the BBC PQ is success on the pitch. The BBC Scotland football team have basically operated under the rather foolish pretence that Rangers will forever be in Celtics shadow and we will keep making arse of things off and on the park. Now that there is change coming down the line in the shape of SG, their rather short sighted feathers are starting to get ruffled. They will seriously have to work out how they approach their coverage of Rangers and on top of all this, the BBC I down south will be wondering why there is not more coverage of what SG is doing up north. If we can win the league, it will be check mate Rangers IMO.
